Maneuver Dial Question

By Lordfiredeath, in X-Wing Rules Questions

After trying to wade through previous posts and the forum search, I thought I would go straight to the wealth of knowledge present on this forum regarding a question that I have often been able to wrap my mind around. My question is in regards to the maneuver dial and chosen maneuver when your ship is facing towards you (in other words, when the bow of your ship is facing you instead of your opponent).

Should the dial represent any turns as if you were facing the rear of the ship (looking at the dial upside down)? I know this is a starting player question, but I have been playing for almost two years now and it always feels odd to put the dial down and turn it so my opponent can see that I picked my maneuver as if I was standing on their side of the table. I know many players turn their dial upside down to help them visualize the turns.

I hope this question makes sense, but I can see many new players putting down dials for turns that they had not planned on making and really wreaking havoc on their strategies. Thank you all in advance for any hints, answers and tips you may be able to provide.

No matter what direction the ship is facing, if you put a forward move it'll move forward; it'll turn/bank left if yuo put a left turn/bank and so on.

The easiest way to avoid mistakes is to turn the dial in your hands to have it match the ship's actual direction

There has to be a hard and fast rule about how this stuff is interpreted, and doing it from the ship's PoV seems like the only practical way.

What should you do when the ship faces left? Do something different if right? The current game mechanic is the best way to do it and it came very naturally to me go visualize my ship and put myself behind it no matter where it is on the board, but i know it's not ready for everyone and thus the turning the dial the direction the ship is facing.

I think everyone is overthinking this a little. Your chosen maneuver should always be done as if you were looking at the back of the ship. Anything else is just confusing. And by far the easiest way to get it right is to keep the dial oriented to the ship.
