Engine Upgrade

By lordzel, in X-Wing

Is engine upgrade worth the hype? I don't own it, and I don't really want to buy the Falcon or the Hound's Tooth, but everyone says that it is one of the best cards. Is it worth it?

in the game of Boostwing you either have a boost or you don't.

It's near broken when used by high-ps pilots, especially on turret ships.

+Both Hounds Tooth and Falcon are neat ships worth every penny

Depends on what you're using it for. It's certainly one of the most powerful upgrades for certain pilots.

Corran Horn+Boost=Near-guaranteed range 1 double taps

Darth Vader+Boost=Amazing arc-dodger with an open EPT

Its a really good upgrade and perhaps a little to good on Large Base ships.
My personal wish is that they had made it have a different cost for small and large base ships.

It is good on large base ships where you can get some great speed and re-positioning, and when it was out it made natural boost almost incomprehensible until autothrusters came out. But putting it on every ship will not make that ship a powerhouse. You don't see TIE Fighters with EU after all.

How the falsdfj do you find these threads, you filthy NECROmancer?

Drugs are bad m'kay?

sorry nvm

Where is the Necromancy or are people so "in the moment" that anything more that a day old and unanswered just just be asked again in a new thread?

As for the worth of an engine upgrade it is like so many other things and depends on what it is used on. You should not feel bad buying the ships that include the upgrade so that 'worth it' question doesn't matter much. When it comes to using it the question is a bit harder as 4 points can make some ships far too expensive while other may really like that action based movement option.

EU is seen a lot on

Darth Vader

Corran Horn? (honestly, don't see him with it a lot and imo he doesn't need it)

YT-1300 named pilots

Dash Rendar

and most likely Dengar when he comes out

the YV-666 doesn't need it, and won't until it gets defensive tech enough to make it a viable fat ship, but it's very playable without it (Slaver w/gunner + bossk crew, Lattz with K4 + weapons engineer)

EU is highly overrated and the first thing I scrap if I want points. Sure some ships really want it, like Han, Dash and RAC/Kenkirk, but on other ships it is just one option among many. Come to think of it, VI single action Dash might be fine with the barrel roll in a few instances...

The higher the PS and the larger the ship, the better EU gets.

I personally always give my Kath and Boba EU. Ships like Vader or Dash benefit quite a bit as well but it isn't as necessary since they already have a BR.

As seen in Sable's flight school 101 for the Lambda Shuttle, it has quite it's uses there too.

Large base boost makes large ships unrealistically fast.

Boost is what you use to make it last longer. Barf damage, disengage, come back around. Rinse, repeat.

Wonderful, another poster with a one track mind and misguided view of the meta.

Both while using them myself and while playing against them, it has been my opinion that a Vader or Corran without Boost is a dead Vader or Corran.

Corran doing green moves to heal shield with R2 needs boost to not stay totally predictable and not lit up. Plus you won't be maximizing his cost since you have no way of consistently sliding into range 1.

Of course a less common Corran Horn build, NOT running R2-D2 for example, maybe doesn't care about gaining boost as much and can do something different. If all you can do is green moves it really helps to be able to modify your flying with your action. The same logic goes for PTL Dash Rendar, getting to use his native barrel roll or his EU granted boost to move around after clearing stress.

Vader meanwhile really needs to arc dodge AND get in range 1 to be worth his points. You can use him without EU of course, but it is like night and day for me. EU is basically an auto add on him, unless you are really hard up to build a stealth device version instead, but never getting range 1 shots limits Vader to taking pot shots instead of laying 3 dice plus a crit or shooting Prockets for example.

Anywho...it's not like you need to buy a lame ship to get EU either..lol..you HAD to buy TIE defender for example to get Predator for example until recently..that was robbery in comparison. :)

Ooops. My bad. Did not look at the year properly. The content of the thread seemed to be from a long time ago.

Sorry all.

Sorry all.

If you call necromancy you be sure the thread it good and dead first. To me this means not only should it be older but it also should be irrelevant and contain information that is out of date. This question is as valid now as it would have been after wave 2 although answers from Wave 2 and ignoring the current state of the game would make the thread old.

I rarely use it and I fly large base ships a lot. I find that if I boost then I cant focus. If I want to boost and focus I have to take a stress I don't want and have to deal with next turn. with large base ships I plane where I want to be planning where my opponent will most likely be. Take a Focus or Target Lock depending on the ship I'm flying take the hits but making sure I hit hard back. boosting wont let me do that.

It's a very useful upgrade - adding the Boost action to a ship which doesn't have it normally - and shines on already expensive ships (pimped out freighters, high PS aces) or ships with limited dials (Shuttles, Yv-666).

However, a note of caution: rely on it too much and it rapidly becomes a crutch (as evidenced in some of the rather myopic posts earlier in the thread). Not every ship in the game is intended to be an arc-dodger, and not every ship in the game has the action economy necessary to be an effective arc dodger. You can throw PtL and Engine Upgrade on a lot of ships, but that doesn't make them Soontir Fel.

I'd say EU is the best modification slot card in the game.

While there are loads of builds that plain don't need it and others that get by without it, there are just so many ships and pilots that shine with it.

None boost aces and large ships especially.

Can also be really fun (but not optimal) on others like HWK's and Y's.

As said don't rely on it but its a fantastic tool to have in your box.

Autothrusters. Sure, those don't stand in competition with each other at all, but the effect is a lot more powerfull.

well, it's true

in my best interpretation of the vague, blanket statement of "best modification slot in the game", the impact of autothrusters seems to eclipse the impact of EU

if you can take it and are not a prototype/green squadron, you don't leave home without it

Want to know how much of a game changer EU is? Fly Vader with EU.

Yep, got to agree there, if a ship can take Autothrusters, then the ship should/must take Autothrusters. With TLTs everywhere now, it's becoming necessary to have at least one ship equipped with it.

But, Engine Upgrade is very strong too. Either to block on low-PS ships, or to reposition optimally on higher-PS ones. Not mentioned so far I think is Talonbane Cobra, who can really benefit from it to get those range 1, 5 dice shots.
