Let's Talk: Strongholds of Resistance

By Blackbird888, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Not that more and more are picking it up, why don't we talk about some of the things in it?

So far, this has got to be my favorite of the location sourcebooks yet. A lot of very cool locations, gear and vehicles (and, to my satisfaction, it actually has pictures of the new vehicles it introduces). I was under the impression that it would split the new player stuff 50/50 between Rebel things and Empire things, but it's focus on Rebel things is a good move, I think.

Many references to WEG, KotOR, X-wing and a few other obscure EU things, which is pretty cool, but the new material is nice. I know Ord Gimmel is all new, but I'm thinking most of the stuff about Kinyen is mostly all new as well? Just reading that over gives me a few ideas that could be used in a F&D story, actually.

Thanks! I worked on both Kinyen and Ord Gimmel, and yes, Ord Gimmel is a completely new planet I created, which is kind of awesome that I got to do that. Kinyen didn't have much to go on, except Doellinism (their religion), so there was a lot of exploring and thread-pulling from a few one-off or innocuous pieces of information that already existed.

I'm also happy to answer questions about Sullust, Mon Cala, and Chandrila, (which I worked on), and the Independence (which I had a ton of input on).

Ryan Brooks and myself wrote the entire first chapter, though. So if you have questions for him, I can always send him this way. But obscure references and what have you are kind of what we live for (when they make sense). So I'm glad people recognize those, and I'm equally glad that those that don't recognize them don't point them out as areas of weirdness that seem out of place.

Keep in mind, I don't have my contributor copy just yet, so you might know more than me for the moment until I see what made final cut.

Polis Massa is featured, yeah? Or no?

I didn't work on it, but if someone has the book, they can maybe get us a list of all the planets that ended up in the book? I know the species is in there.

  • Chandrila
  • Kinyen
  • Mon Cala
  • Sullust
  • Ord Gimmel
  • Roche
  • Thyferra
  • Yavin 4
  • Independence
  • A handful of additional planets mentioned

Polis Massa isn't covered as planet location, but is one of the bases.

I'm actually pretty psyched that new vehicles all get artwork.

There are only a couple of new vehicles. The new stealth fighter is there, but really, really hard to spot. And it looks very familiar, as if they re-purposed from something's I've seen before, but I can't place it. But yes, all have pictures.

I'm guessing the bit about Sanctuary is new as well?

And, guess what, guys? Giant space slugs!

If someone can list the minor planets and such, I can have a better idea of what I can talk about? I don't want to discuss a planet only to find out it had been cut from the book unbeknownst to me.

Talay... Interesting choice....

Yeah Talay and Sanctuary were def Ryan's worlds. Both are pretty deep cuts from the EU.

Hey everyone! I noticed you guys talking about some of the entries I wrote for this book and thought I'd pop in and say hello. Keith and I wrote all of chapter 1 together. I tackled Roche, Yavin 4, Thyferra, and co-wrote the Independence. I also handled the minor planet entries.

I haven't gotten my contributor copy, so I'm going on what everyone else on here is saying as far as what made the final cut. I saw a couple of mentions about Sanctuary and Talay. I can't take credit for creating either one of those. Sanctuary is an old WEG reference as one of the Alliance's oldest safeworlds. Talay is a hat tip to the Dark Forces video game, and I included it because Tak Base was a pretty prominent Alliance sector base before the Battle of Yavin.

I hope everyone is enjoying the book! I'd love to field more questions or comments, especially about the sections I wrote ;)

While I am definitely very happy to see the MC30C and MC40A get official stats I'm disappointed in a few areas regarding the book's ship selection. First from what I understand all of the new Alliance capital ship models are Mon Cal designs and I was really hoping for some of the capships Sullust produced for the Alliance or Bothawui, since they were a major cruiser production center at this time. Second I still feel the system badly needs more Alliance Sil 7 ship classes. And finally I was hoping for some FFG created capital ships rather then just Legends designs.

So I really like the little box in the Independence part about reduced crews. That's a nice bit of info. The Thyferra bit makes me wonder if we'll ever see the vratix as a species. I never knew how... fascinating the production of bacta actually works. I know it's not new info, but yeah. Didn't know that.

Your guess is as good as mine on if we'll ever see the Vratix as a species in any of the books. I agree, they're definitely interesting. Although when I read the source material and re-familiarized myself with the Vratix and how bacta is made, I was like...

Any thoughts on the Roche entry? I'm not going to lie, I was particularly proud of that entry and I'm anxious to see what made the final cut.

It's all very interesting. A lot of flavorful locations and idea starters, certainly.

The Sullust entry mentions several SoroSuub cap ships, like the Liberator-class and the Bulwark-class, so future book? Lead by Example, maybe?

I haven't got much to contribute yet, since I haven't got the book yet. I will say however that I've promoted it form the "looks neat" list to "Buy it NOW, dagnabbit!" because it looks like there is a metric crap-ton of useful stuff in it. I've been jotting down some adventure ideas lately and it appears this book will have useful tidbits for darn near all of my recent ideas.

Hopefully. I figure the Bulwark III won't come out until the Executor class since in Rebellion it was the rebel counterpart to the Executor class. I'll be glad to see the Liberator and Dauntless as well. I'm hoping the Liberator will be Sil 7 and honestly I've always preferred the Dauntless class to the MC80. I always thought the MC80 needing a Mon Cal bridge crew for full efficiency was contrary to the Alliance's ideal that all sentient species are equal. I would also love to see some FFG created capital ship classes for AOR because I love most of the ones they have made for EOE.

I'm also happy to answer questions about ... the Independence (which I had a ton of input on).

Is it correct when it says that the Independence is of the Home One class?

Also, the Independence lists a complement of 120 fighters in the stats, but the detailed breakdown talks about two bays of 24 fighters and a reserve bay of 36 fighters. Unless there's supposed to be two reserve bays (one for each primary bay) then the numbers of fighters don't quite add up.

Well the fighter compliment is right for a Home One class if memory serves and I'm guessing there are two reserve bays aince two reserves and two mains match the given fighter compliment perfectly.

There's the MC-80a, b, liberty class, home one class, mc-90, etc. But the Independence is listed as a Home One Type on wookieepedia, which claims the information came from the X-Wing video game. But think of it like the Nimitz class aircraft carrier. There also was a USS nimitz, which was the first nimitz class carrier.

WOTC's Starships of the Galaxy is where the 120 fighters lore number came from. If you can make the numbers add up to 120, then I think it's safe to assume that's how it should be. Like I said, I still don't have my book yet, so I can't see it directly and tell you.

Depending source, it makes sense. In addition, each ship the Mon Cals make is as much a work of art. Some variants probably had more fighter or fewer, while armaments were also divided up. Like wise, the placement, size, and number of star fighter bays would be different from ship to ship.

In addition, most likely with the smaller hips, there was a variation in mission profile. Some will be designed with superior speed, others with superior defenses, and others with greater offensive abilities.

I'm just curious if there has been an official line from Disney with the New Canon about the various ships. I feel it might be asking them a bit much to make FFG an official source for Star Wars information.

At least, that's my take on it.

I'm curious but how exactly were the MC80 class ships built so that it required a Mon Cal bridge crew? Is there anything specific in nature?

Most of the lore talks about how the MC80s (and other, smaller MCs) are mostly designed with Mon Calamari physiology in mind. It's a thing that hasn't been translated over into anything mechanical yet, but the other ships mentioned (Liberator, Dauntless, Bulwark) are all products meant for a wider market. So if you want to adhere to lore a bit more, more non-Mon Cal cap ships would be nice.
