Help me understand point cost

By Eyegor, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Warning: The following post is from a complete newb who hasn't played his first game yet. I am a long time lurker however and think that I have at least a tenuous grip on the theory of X-Wing.

After having my own personal unboxing of the TFA core I'm struck with a few of the point costs.

One example: Is a naked Blue Novice (24) really worth about the same as Omega Ace w/ Wired, Weps Guid.(23)? Now I don't know think Ace would actually take WG but you get the point. In a heads up battle between the two (the flying being equal of course) is this really an even match? Doesn't seem like it to this rook. I'm sure there are other examples but this one jumped out at me.

Thanks for taking the time to help out the greenhorns.

There are some chunks of 24 points that will almost always beat other chunks of 24 points, especially if you are just running them with no other ships. Some ships and upgrades are a little overcosted and some are a great deal for their cost. Then you've got some ships that kind of have a rock-paper-scissors dynamic going on and look great against certain match-ups and weak against others.

Overall, the point costs in this game are fairly well balanced, especially if you are playing the game casually.

You've asked a dangerous question. :) Everyone has a different answer as to what ships are worth the value of their points. There are many, many long and drawn out threads on the forum about it.

If you're playing for fun, do whatever you like and try out weird combinations. If you're ultimately wanting to go competative on the tournament scene (store/regional/national/worlds) then a whole different set of concepts will come into play.

My favourite builder is here: https://geordanr.github.io/xwing/and you can explore what you get for different points costs.

Experiment, and have fun!

Things may or may not look good on paper, but that doesn't necessarily mean they will play that way. You can create a list that may go really well in one game and then crumble in the next. That's the nature of this game.

All about matchups and what succeeds in the widest spread. MTG is the same. Often, if a point issue is prevalent enough, ffg will issue a fix in the form of an upgrade. Happened to the awing, to the tie advanced, etc. IMO,,the defender has needed it for a long time.

Thanks for the replies. From what I've seen of list building so far, the points do seem to balance out if thought is put into it. A list is usually built for some type of symmetry. Take away that element and like real life, some match-ups just don't work, I guess. Time to fly.
