Seven years ago I left The Netherlands (or Holland as some know it) and followed my heart to Belgium. Anyone else on this forum who left his country of origin for another?
Anyone emigrated from his native country?
UK till age 27, moved to Canada because the UK wasn't dismal and cold enough.
That's kinda what cununculus did.
Left Austria 15 years ago for Switzerland (work...go figure) and kept moving west. Right now at the french border and watching the developments over there with growing apprehension.
I left London, England in 2004 and moved to Iowa, USA. Cant get much different in scenery, my house even just narrowly avoided being hit by a tornado this week! My kids playset wasnt so lucky. Now thats something that wouldn't happen back in England! The one think that constantly amuses me is being mistaken for Australian.
Edited by Mystic ForceBorn and raised in London but left at 18 and went traveling, spent 20 months in Israel, back to the UK and then quickly to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam before moving to Denver and now Orange County. Until getting to the US I hadn't spent more than 6 years in one place since I first left the UK, and have been here 14 years. Tomorrow is actually my one year SoCal anniversary!
This place has a LOT of problems but, by Jove, I love my adopted home!

I've been mistaken for Australian so many times that it's reached meme like status with my friends...

It's mid November and we haven't dipped below 10 Celsius yet during the day, it's wet though.
I miss it...
Its been pretty crisp, bright and mild for november round my way, still only need a tshirt and a hoody in the evenings.
Mind you i've not seen much sun, been going out til late and sleeping in or wasting my life on fallout4.
Sooo much happening in october on the uk alt music scene in my area

American's have mistaken me for American before apparently I have no accent.
Moved from Australia to Canada.
Been here 5 years.
Still regret it, but stuck here now.
My accent will betay me for a long time
Though it has softened up though
There are several cultual and linguistic differences which at times may lead to funny or slightly embarassing moments
I do miss the open areas between towns. Flanders sometimes seems like a huge village.
On the other hand; education, healthcare and child-daycare are a lot more affordable here and none the worse for it.
Climate is the same as in Holland or the UK so no dealbreaker there.
Both nations in the Low Countries have their pro's and con's.
My little family is happy here, so we'll stay here for quite some time!
I miss it...
Don't.
It's overcrowded, overpriced and overrated.

I'm from rural Warwickshire. I miss the smell of fields, my home town, weather patters... Yeah I like where I am now, I really, really do. But of course I miss where I come from.
That's kinda what cununculus did.

Yeah Belgium is just as wet as Holland, and our government is a bunch of effin idiots who are running us into the ground...
but we have better food and drink

I've been mistaken once for Texan by visiting tourist, probably because my local dialect also has a bit of a (sing-song) drawll to it.
My accent will betay me for a long time

Yeah we're all village people here... No wait!
Limburg still has the open spaces. I can look out any window in my grandmother's house and not see another house.
But I gotta admit that it is nice to drive to the Efteling and look around at all the nature and farmlands on the way over there.

Can´t like this one enough!
Though to be fair, politicians are the same the world over. They just pretend to be different.

Limburg and West-Flanders have both open spaces. The north of East-Flanders and large parts of Wallonia as well.
I like those areas a lot
. Even though the centre of the country feels like a big village there are nice green spots hidden in between. It´s like finding a nice park where you didn´t expect one. Now I finally settled down I have a nice base to go driving towards the sea to the west or the mountains in the east and south. Just should do it more often. I miss the sea
Also, now I know I am not going to move to a new city for many years I can finally try to find some players in the area to play against
Any players of X-wing in East-Flanders?
(Though I should head off to Limburg some day to have a game against Robin Graves
)

I have spent my entire life in the Great Plains and one word of advice that I have is that if you ever hear that siren, get your butt into a basement or other shelter pronto. Unless it is noon on the first Saturday of the month, that is a test. Tornadoes are no joke. They can wipe any man-made structure from the face of the Earth.
Where in Iowa are you? I live just North of Des Moines.
If Donald Trump is elected President, I will seriously consider it.

Cross the ocean towrds Belgium. I am told they have nice beer and chocolate. And there is X-wing too!

Yeah and no natural disasters! Well the occasional heavy storm and some low territories get flooded but that's it. No typhoons, no tornados, no earthquakes (well we had ONE. way back in the 90's... It didn't even do much.) no tsunamis and definatly no jockulhaups

Do you have either baseball or basketball? I can do without American Football, but not both baseball and basketball.
Honestly, my job would not prevent a move like that. I work from home and it matters not one bit where I live so long as I have high-speed internet access.
