Cursed Squads

By markcsoul, in X-Wing

So I have a squad I've been running for awhile now that I'm convinced is cursed.

It has a winning record, though not as high as it should be I feel.

But the reason I say it's cursed is that the vast majority of games, win or lose, I have horrible luck and/or my opponent has great luck.

Now I don't just mean dice luck, though that's often a part of it. Moreso those critical situations where you need something to go a certain way, it always seems to go in the way of my opponent.

It's getting to the point that it's almost too stressful to play it as most of the games I'm convinced I'm going to lose from all the bad luck I'm having, even if I do often win in the end.

Anyone else ever have a "cursed" squad?

Not in X-wing, however my brits in Flames of War are known far and wide for their ability to fail motivation tests. The record for one squad is failing a 4+ check (with a re-roll) 7 rounds in a row!

Do you have a link to the list?

I don't have a cursed squad, but I do have a cursed pilot: Corran Horn.

No matter how i play him, he always find some (unlucky) ways to die horribly.

I think I may have a cursed squad. I recently went 1-4 in a local tournament. I had some 'horrible' dice rolls, losing Soontir Fel and Whisper twice each to blank four dice evade rolls. I'd flown a very similar squad in a smaller tournament a week before going 2-1, only losing a close game to a well flown 4xTLT list.

... Who am I kidding?! There's no such thing as a cursed squad. But if you've convinced yourself the squad is cursed then you're already at a 'mental' disadvantage to your opponent. Concentrate on what goes right in your games (especially things you do well such as positioning and tactical choices) rather than focusing on things that are out of your control (dice rolls). I've had games where on the first attack my opponents rolled a hit and three crits and my initial reaction has been 'Oh! It's like that is it?' and I've gone on to lose by playing too conservatively or putting ships in bad positions because I'm convinced they're going to die anyway. Keep positive and treat each and every dice roll as an individual event (as that is what it is). Just because it's 'statistically' unlikely you're not going to roll fifteen blank dice in a row doesn't mean it won't happen (it does, believe me!). Just remember the times when you've rolled fifteen hits in a row and move on to the next phase. Good luck markcsoul... My thoughts are with you! ;)

There are a lot of locals that are switching to the dice app as they are tired of blaming their dice. I did that a year ago...until the dice app gave me bad luck!

I will say that my 5 x Alpha Interceptors w/ AutoThrusters was a very unlucky squad. My dice were terrible and I always got Direct Hits like you wouldn't believe. I lost 3 of 5 in one game to Direct Hits by end of Turn 5. I quickly retired that list.

I have the opposite problem.

Whenever I setup Quint Autothruster Squints my opponent just happens to setup dual Agressors. I will then proceed to throw out perfect attack rolls all game with above average defense rolls.

This means that I don't know if the squad is actually good, or if I'm just lucking out with good matchups and lucky dice rolls. I've flown it probably ~5-6 times now and haven't lost, or haven't lost more than once at least.

Confirmation bias: the thread.

No matter how i play him, he always find some (unlucky) ways to die horribly.

Doesn't it always happen this way with the pilots who are supposed to be 'super good'?

Not for me. Triple evade naked green dice have saved my full health Corran from taking any damage.

With the dice mods all the aces have, they only die if they blank out hardcore. With their dice mods and evade dice and regen they can shrug off decent attacks with below average rolls.

It takes hardcore whiffs or slinging out hyper offense like TL+F 4 dice to really have a realistic chance of a wipe in a shot or two on your typical ace.

Aces are pretty reliable, as long as they don't mess up too bad they'll work wonders.

My squad felt cursed last night alright my red dice were cold, I had maarek point blank against a hwk out of arc I roll three dice all blanks so I spend my TL and again all blanks it was super frustrating.

And my mate was rolling three hits all night long never needing to modify his rolls.

I'm cursed to never use B-wings, my favorite ship. Especially against Decimators.

Poe is my redemption.

So far new and improved Vader is not pulling his weight for me. The generic pilots don't talk about it for fear of force choke.

blocked Poe takes

1.) modified cluster missiles

2.) two crackshot, focused; ranged one Blacksquadrons

doesn't die

then he takes

3.) another round of modified cluster missiles

4.) after getting blocked again, two more range 1 black squadron shots

didn't die

never played that squad again; seismics are the new hype (no dice!)

I'm cursed with Prockets. I rarely roll more than 3 hits (after modification) with the **** things. A few times I've rolled 1 or 2 hits. Against me its always 4 or 5 hits.
