The Other 16*

Last year, after a few months of playing X-Wing, I took Imp Boba and three TIEs to Worlds. Imp Boba, three TIEs- and I'm pretty sure I didn't attempt to block anything all day. Sheesh. Went 2-4. I can't even...

Ugh. Moving on.

This year I played at least twice a week, made top 16 at three Regionals, went 6-2 at Worlds, and made the cut! I mean, I came in 26th.

It was a great day. FFG hosted a flawless event at their gaming palace. All eight games were against stand up guys. The brisket was spectacular...

But man, that top 16 cut. Another year and I'm on to day two. So I started thinking; how about, at the very least, we start a 'support group' for those of us that almost made it? "Yeah dawg, I know how you feel, right?" Then I thought some more. How about we share make up stories about how the small cut devestated our lives? Drove us to X-Wing ruin. Caused us to live out the rest of Worlds in a Dr. Pepper fueled haze.

We could become parts of a greater legend. People would whisper as we pass, "Shhh, don't stare, he was one of The Other 16." We could make a one time run of 16 T-shirts that say, "Top 32 Worlds 2015." What else can the boards come up with?

Oh, see you next year.

Y'know,

Top 32

Worlds 2015

Would be pretty sweet on a T-shirt, and rather gently tease the top-16 cutoff. :)

We actually did something similar for SWLCG Worlds last year. Only the top 8 got official playmats, so the rest of us in the top 16 had our own made up. Because getting that close to the top without anything to show for it really does stink.

What about bringing the worlds to Europe for once.... for all those that never get a chance otherwise

At least you had a very successful year.

I'm 5-7 in competitive play this year, after going 11-4 last year. It's beyond frustrating as I play at least 10 games a week (mostly vassal), and I know I'm a better player than I was a year ago.

Therefore, this is not meant as a swipe towards FFG or meant to diminish the achievement of the participants. It still is a large and difficult tournament to participate in (and sure as hell, I wouldn´t make it into the top 16). But instead of Worlds it might be more honest to call it the X-wing US Open or something ;)

Always fun to see ´´World championships´´ where the majority of the contestants are from one country, with some token resistance from foreigners who happened to be there or were invited to be there.

I love this idea! :D

I'd love to see lists of what 'the other sixteen' flew. Jesper, one of the guys from the UK rocked in at twenty-second I believe so everyone on this side of the pond is feeling your pain guys!

Worlds for Infinity is in Spain. I've never heard an American complain they should move them to America :/

How about if you win Worlds, you host the event in your home country next year?

Considering that the USA is about the size of Western Europe, I'm sure there was someone in Arizona who could not go because it was 1,500 miles away. It has to be somewhere and wherever it is someone won't be able to go due to travel concerns.

went 6-2 missed the cut by 15 points of MOV. If i could of done one more damage to a Y wing in my second loss, I would of been in. Instead I ended up 18th. I feel your pain. lol

From the site: "... frozen wastelands of America ..."

That's where I live, dude. ~I just can't catch a break this month.

If it makes you feel better, Irvine is a dusty shmear of onion patches stuck between LA and San Diego. It's like the Kenosha, Wisconsin of California.

How's this for a T-Shirt:

Amongst all the loser at worlds,... I was one of the best. THE BEST!

Y'know,

It would be more entertaining if you sold them to more people than just the Top 32. =)

You know, to make a point.

I'd love a t-shirt if one is made.

Could read: the next top 16.

I'm sure that the 3 international folks in the Top 8 appreciate being called "token resistance".

Much less all the other players who came from: Canada, Mexico, Kuwait, Australia, Iceland, the UK, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, France, etc.

Top 20 reporting in. First time at Worlds, I guess I would have made the cut last year. This year if the cut was to Top 32 then my Top 32 opponent would have been PS7 Dash / PS10 Horn vs my PS8 IG88s. I would have taken take those odds!

It's not my website! It's Lyle Hayhurst's. :)

Yeah, I hear you there.... I had an IG88 at 4 hull and no shields several games, losing 24 points of MoV. I missed the cut by 47 points. If I had two more shields I would have made the cut.

[edit] The main problem is making the cut in the middle of a point bracket. It's an awkward cut. Top 32 would have been a VERY clean cut this year, as the 32nd player had 30 points and the 33rd player had 29 points. The problem then is that the first-place player from Swiss really deserves a bye for going 8-0 undefeated. Maybe they will change things up next year. ;)

You ever heard of this sport called cyclocross? (Probably not...)

It hit me in the face as soon as I migrated into Belgium ;)

As said, my point was not to diminish anyone's achievements. Good to hear people have done well!

My point was the amount of competitors of a singular country in contrast to the remaining competitors.

If more than half of the competitors are from one country can you call it a World Championship even if some of the others do well?

Take the above example of Cyclocross for instance. There is a whole 'world' series of races to determine who is the best cyclist. Of the around 40 - 60 cyclist appearing at the start, more than half, if not two thirds, is from Belgium.

Again nothing against FFG or the achievements of players, my main issue (if you can call it that, as said I think it is funny, not a major problem) was with the use of the term Worlds if there is no equal form of representation. To stay with cycling as an example. The World Championship allows each country to field one team, all of equal size.

Since X-Wing isn't a team game, there will always be someone who is "over-represented" at Worlds. That's simply the way it is, unless they re-structure that one tournament completely differently from every other Premier level event.

I'm unsure why FFG insists on running a full number of Swiss Rounds and then a Top Cut, a full number of Swiss Rounds is only needed to get an undefeated player, which is unneeded if there is a cut.
