Keyan and Kyle

By Chargers, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I don't think this combo will quite work like I originally thought, so just looking to confirm that Kyle doesn't trigger off Keyan and then make Keyan better.

Keyan Farlander

When attacking, you may remove 1 stress token to change all of your Focus results to Hit results.

Kyle Katarn

After you remove a stress token from your ship, you may assign a focus token to your ship.

Yes, Kyle can trigger off Keyan removing a stress token, but it's not compulsory. An ability featuring the word "may" makes it optional. You don't have to do it if you don't want to. But Keyan could attack, do his thing, and Kyle would be able to give him a focus for use in defence. It's all good.

I just picked up Rebel Aces yesterday, and was looking for some good combos with it. Thanks for posting this, think I'll try using Keyan with Kyle this weekend.

It's a dangerous 1 Agility ship at 42 points, but it's a favourite of mine...

Keyan Farlander — B-Wing 29
Stay On Target 2
Advanced Sensors 3
"Mangler" Cannon 4
Kyle Katarn 3
B-Wing/E2 1
Ship Total: 42

Another fun thng to do with a B, albeit it requires some brains to function because PREDICT THY OPPONENT'S MOVES!

Ten numb — B-Wing 31
PTL - 3
Advanced Sensors - 3
Kyle Katarn - 3
B-Wing/E2 - 1
Ship Total: 41

It has a total of 3 "actions"
because you declare a Sensor action+Ptl action, get a stress

before revealing a green ofcourse!

remove the stress and get a katarnFocus!

barrelroll+Targetlock+focus can bring the unfortunate foe a ton of hate.

Numbs ability is not always useful, but 8-skill is.

B-wing arcdodge time!

Yep, got that. Thanks.

But what I wondered ...

Keyan attacks, removes 1 stress token ... which interrupts and triggers Kyle to assign a focus token ... which allows Keyan to use that focus to change all of your Focus results to Hit results.

I don't think so, but wanted to verify.

You can do that, you just wouldn't want to as you are wasting the stress-removing ability of Keyan.

It's your abilities and they trigger at the same time, so you get to decide which order. So I'd decide to use the stress on my attack, and keep the focus token for defence,

I don't think that you could do that, no. The rules let you interrupt effects to nest actions, but I don't think anything allows you to nest token spending. Consider R4 Agromech: "When attacking, after you spend a focus token, you may acquire a target lock on the defender." If you could interrupt the effect of spending a focus token to spend another token, you could do something like this:

1. Roll for attack: [blank], [Focus], [Hit]

2. Spend focus

3. Before modifying any dice, acquire target lock from R4

4. Spend the target lock

5. Reroll the [blank], get a [Focus]

6. Apply the effect of the previously spent focus token, changing both [Focus] results to [Hit] results

And no, the R4 Agromech doesn't work this way, so I'd say that Keyan/Kyle wouldn't work the way you describe, either.

But I'm not sure I'm actually answering your question, because I don't understand how gaining a focus token and spending it for an effect that you're already getting from spending the stress token would make Keyan "better."

I think you could do what he suggested, as Keyan isn't 'spending a token' with the stress. he has an ability that lets you remove a stress, and you can (as the FAQ has stated) use that ability to change focus results to hit results IF you want to.

Kyle triggers off of you removing a stress, and so he kicks in when you use Keyan's ability. So as with other things that trigger off of the same thing, you can execute them in the order you wish. You are still in your modify dice step until you have chosen to do or not do anything you can to modify your dice. So technically you can:

1. Roll attack dice.

2. Choose to remove Keyan's stress (not changing your results)

3. Gain a focus from Kyle

4. Spend that focus immediately on your dice.

But as we both said, you wouldn't really want to as you are wasting a focus you could bank for defence and wasting half of Keyan's ability.

And as for the R4 example, if you had another effect that triggered on spending a focus token, again you could do both. Like in the FAQ, it says that R4 works when you use a Blaster Turret. So two card effects (an attack and a target lock) are activating on the same trigger (spending a focus token)

What Chargers is asking appears possible that of spending the token during the same phase, in a difficult to set up scenario...

Keyan + Calculation + E2 + Kyle

Keyan has a stress token, declares attack, rolls attack dice, rolls 3 <focus> rolls, during the Attack Modifies Dice removes the stress token to change 2 <focus> rolls to [HIT] rolls, Kyle triggers and drops a Focus token on the ship, which Keyan then activates Calculation to change the last <focus> to a [CRIT] roll.

Ignore that. I forgot you have to change ALL your <focus> rolls with the token, not some.
