Question about Force Talisman

By Neredan Kaz, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

I want to create a light side version of the demon mask for my homebrew Jedi group, the Ilusai*.

* Name place holder

The ilusai were a special order within the Jedi Temple Guards whose sole purpose was to protect arguable their most valuable assets, the Initiate (Youngling) Clans. Although each of the clans had an assigned Jedi Master who did oversee their instruction, they also had a Jedi Temple Guard assigned to protect their quarters.

During Order 66 the Narglatch clan was off Temple accompanied by their intructor, Jedi Master Omara Xefris and the Jedi Temple Guard Kirdan Xoth. Kirdan was added as a last minute asset to increase the protection of the clan, who contained the daughter of Crime Lord.

For the next decades the "ilusai" jedi kept on the move while helping others and recruiting Force Sensitive to their ranks.

The ilusai are essentially jedi but with these differences:

Marriage - Ilusai do marry and form families.

Masks - The ilusai use their masks as a tribute of their founder as well to protect their identities during these troubled times.

• Ilusai Mask – The ilusai mask is powerful Force Talisman which ties this Jedi branch with their beginnings, the Jedi Temple Guards. A Force-sensitive character wearing an ilusai mask increases his wound threshold by 2 while he is a light side Force user. Furthermore; characters making Discipline checks to resist fear caused by a dark side character remove a number of set back dices equal to the Force rating of the character wearing the mask. The ilusai create a mask as part of their rite of passage alongside their lightsaber.

What do you think, it is balanced? I based it off as a counterpart of the demon mask.

Lightsaber pike - It's the weapon of choice of the ilusai healers (healers and protectors), but it's not mandatory.

I like it! :D

Seems perfectly reasonable to me! However, I took it as implied by the morality section and also the example force talismans that bonus strain is more appropriate to light siders than bonus wounds. You could also get away with making the item slightly more powerful by giving it an additional minor property, as light side artifacts tend to be more focused in their purpose and narrow in application than dark side ones. My version of the artifact might look something like this:

The Ilusai Mask

The ilusai mask is powerful Force Talisman which ties this Jedi branch to their beginnings; the Jedi Temple Guards. A Force-sensitive character wearing an ilusai mask may access its powers while they are a light side paragon. The mask increases the character's strain threshold by 2 and removes a number of setback dice equal to their Force Rating when making Discipline checks to resist fear caused by a dark side character. Finally, when resisting fear caused by a dark side character, the wearer may spend uncancelled advantage to inflict strain on the source of the fear effect, up to a maximum of their willpower in strain.

In the days of the Old Republic, the ilusai created their masks as part of their rite of passage, alongside their lightsabers.

I like it. I may steal it.

Thanks guys!

Major edit:

I sped read the thread amd did not gave you credit Azraiel. I like your version Azraiel. My question is if I want to change the part of: "removes a number of setback dice equal to their Force Rating when making Discipline checks to resist fear by a darksider" to: "resist fear period"; will it make it op?

I will see if I can post later a sketch of the ilusai that I have.

Here you go hope that you like them:

The lightsaber "claw" was based on some concept for Plo Koon that I found in the Art of Episode III and liked so much, I have not time to work on the stats of this weapon so I will use her using dual shotos.

Nice artwork! I reckon that saber-claw would work something like a Shoto with Defensive 1 and Linked 1, btw.

On the modification you asked about, yes, I think that would be a bit too powerful if the goal is to make a polar opposite to the demon mask as opposed to something more powerful than it. Fear is one of the primary sources of conflict gain for "good guys", after all. I'm thinking of the mask as a spiitual shield of sorts that wards off unnatural fear rather than something that actually makes you braver. So in hindsight something like "removes a number of setback dice equal to their Force Rating when making Discipline checks to resist fear from any supernatural or dark side source, such as from the Terrify Ability, the Influence Force Power, a Sith Lord, or any creature with dark side taint." would be about right, imho.

You know I shall use your recommendation on the lightsaber claw.

You are right my addition to the Force Talisman was too much. I will stick with yours.

Thanks a lot!

My pleasure!

Azraiel, here is my take on the Lightsaber Claw based on your recommendation:

Name: Lightsaber Claw

Skill: Lightsaber

Damage: 5

Crit: 2

Range: Engaged

Encumbrance: 2

HP: 4

Price: ( R ) 18,600

Rarity: 10

Special: Breach 1, Defensive 1, Linked 1, Sunder, Unwieldy 3

Do you think is balanced?

  • Treat it like the Temple Guard Lightsaber Pike in Keeping the Peace. When purchasing attachments for this weapon (including crystals)), each attachments costs double the listed price. This represents the fact that the double-bladed lightsaber generally requires two of each attachment (one for each blade). However, when installing and modding these attachments follow all normal rules.
  • I would change the Unweildy to 4 as is the Guard Shoto.
