Nube question on rewards and penalties

By The Thing In The Attic, in Elder Sign

I might be missing something here but the rule book (and I have the revised one) isn't very clear on how to interpret the symbols under the rewards and penalties parts of an adventure. The FAQ doesn't help either. So does a doom symbol as a reward cause you to add a doom token or remove a doom token...likewise the monster symbol. I've seen a clue token symbol on a penalty so does that mean gains clue token or loose one?

Trying to apply the rules as written doesn't make sense.

The rules say you receive the symbol...so how do you receive a doom token?

On a revised edition I feel this really should have been written more comprehensively. It feels sloppy that by each symbol they didn't write exactly what happens as a penalty and what happens as a reward.

Thanks for any assistance

Phil

It seems like you have an edition of the game without errata cards. Some cards coming with the core set (Other World cards) had erroneously a doom token among the rewards. These cards received an errata and replacements are to be found in Unseen Forces

If you don't own the expansion, and you're not willing to purchase it (perfectly reasonable option, especially if you're just beginning your game experience), simply consider those cards as not having the doom icon among the rewards.

Thanks, i will probably get unseen forces soon but its currently out of stock until December.

And the monster rewards...do you take one from the cup and keep it or place it on an adventure following normal placement rules.

Yes. Monster rewards are correct, despite this could seem bizarre. It means that you succeed at the adventure, but something went wrong along the way, and a sort of "minor evil" appeared consequently.

All monsters appearing (both due to rewards or penalties) are placed according to the normal rules. This mean the monster(s) can be spawned also on the card replacing a just passed adventure

I concur with Julia's answer on both items. Also, I believe the answer to your questions can be find on Page 9 of the PDF rule book (link provided below).

Awesome thanks for your swift and helpful comments.

It's been a pleasure

Love everything FFG.

IMO, you're better off with doom token adding reward as opposed to the "fixed" versions from UF. Doom tokens are already acquired at a slow-ish pace in general, having cards that effectively turn back the timer just helps make the game easier. Say you're at 2 doom, complete an Adventure that adds a doom, so you're at 3. Compare completing an Adventure that removes one, you're at 1, so likely at least 2 Mythos (8 actions) to get to the 3 you would've been with the original card, in some cases I'd say it can be even 12 or 16 (3-4 days) actions.

LOL. Dam, he just started playing the game... I agree the core set is too easy, but allow the guy some time to discover the game :)
