My Left Eye Sees Ghosts

By graver2, in Dark Heresy

One of my players has recently expressed an interest in a bionic implant that she swears exists but now can't recall it's name nor whether it's actually in one of the DH books or whether she saw it in an different game book altogether and is getting her wires crossed.

She claims there is a bionic eye that is made from a rare and odd mineral that allows it's user to perceive warp currents and warp entities at the cost of their long term sanity. It is an ancient thing which is plucked from one dead wearer and handed off to the next (not unusual in 40k), but I don't remember running across anything like that in any of the books. So, dose such a thing already exist?

If not, I'll come up with the eye my self as it's too cool to pass up. It'll effectively be a condensed psy-tracker made into an eye that will give 1 IP per 9 rolled when using the eyes psyniciance skill or perhaps 1 IP if doubles are rolled. Nice, easy, and simple. I just want to double check that she isn't actually referring to something already stated up and floating in an odd corner of one of the books.

Never heard of such a thing myself...but I don't have all of the books.

I can think of a couple of candidates- there's the bionic eyepiece of Lord Commander Drang(?) of Segmentum Tempestus in Barrington J Bayley's Eye of Terror , which granted him good enough eyesight that he could pick out an enemy ship from the open deck of an Emperor-class BBV at up to half a light-year's distance. Combined with a telescope from the same daemon world, he wound up insane, having viewed the entirety of creation (and the warp) simultaneously (at least, IIRC); there's the Soul-Helm of a particular Inquisitor whose name escapes me (a featured NPC from the large-scale skirmish game of the same name, the winning entry of a competition, I believe), which used an eldar soulstone for the visor and may have been surgically attached. It had various cool, but sinister and dangerous effects. Finally (and most mundanely), there is the psyocculum, a piece of wargear from Codex: WitchHunters, the description of which can be paraphrased as "glasses that make witches obvious"; and the psy-tracker (a kind of auspex that tracks warp disturbances), which can be fitted either as part of a good bionic eye, or worn separately but fitted to feed into the bionic (a nifty design one of my players favours, but with a special monocle rather than a cybernetic enhancement, as it lets him plug in a number of different feeds as the situation arises).

Offhand, I can't recall any other possible precedents, but I'll do some research and brave precarious and dusty stacks of actual books. Reports to come if and when I find anything.

perhaps she is thinking that a navigators third "eye" is a bionic it certainly has those powers and i suppose you could take it out of a navigators head.

I'm fairly certain I recognize what she's talking about, but I can't name it or say where it's from.

I realize this isn't much help.

Could be an ancient "near unique" archeotech implant, the type you dedicate an entire campaign on to find one...

The eyepiece had two parts, the bionic eye and the telescope, the telescope allows people to view anywhere or anything, including the Emperors palace itself. When combined the pair sucked the commander into the warp itself...

Theres a similar device to what she's describing in DotDG but thats massive and used on a ship rather than as a bionic

Makes me think of Corum Jhaelen Irsei an aspect of the Eternal Champion from Michael Moorcocks stories.

Thanks all for the help! She's recently come to the conclusion that she was probably thinking of something in Unhallowed Metropolis and getting it confused. I'll still be making one for my game as such a thing is just begging for abuse :-) I just wanted to make sure it hadn't been done and was sitting in some odd corner of one of the books somewhere.

Well their is an eye glass piece which has a lens made from the third eye of a navigator. Its from the inquisitor war trilogy with Inquisitor Draco. It allowed him to gain a map of the eldar webway when it was imprinted on it (this allowed him to locate the Black library and to gain the path to where all times meet so he could resurrect his assassin lover). Of course anyone that look directly at the eyepiece without protection would start to commit suicide or have their soul sucked into the lens.

God, Jaq Draco is such a ****.
