As a veteran BFG player I'd like to see a revitalized BFG, though for me the Starwars universe > the WH40k universe, so BFG was always a poor man's starwars for me. Model-wide I'd never go back. However the rule sytem is much better for larger battles of 15+ ships a side than Armada is, so it'd be nice to use as an epic version of Armada. It also has a great Starwars vibe with rules for launching fighters and boarding actions.
Edited by Lord TareqGW will re-release battle fleet gothic
Its no bashing when you tell the truth.
Battlefleet Gothic is interesting news, btw.
If they would release a big Core set to a very reasonable price and if the reviews of the rules are good I MIGHT give it a try. Because I pretty much like the 40k space ships ...
I always enjoyed BFG and Mordheim (and still have all the models handy). BFG still goes into rotation for gaming here every once in a while so it could be cool if GW brought it back. Unless they totally changed the rules or the scale of the ships (to require purchase of a new model line). Time will tell I suppose.
In the meantime - c'mon Armada Wave 2 !!
For those believing it is faked...
It was shown initially on the GW Belconnen Facebook page.
I've had it confirmed in the GW Calgary store, via the Warhammer App...
So that's news from points on the earth almost directly opposite to each other...
Hehe ... no re-release of Warhammer Fantasy?
GW has this awful habit of just wasting their potential on games (inadequate support/development) or hollowing out support through bad rules/balance and then just kind of letting the game die. Then later on some other company comes along, makes a game that scratches a very similar itch that all the abandoned/disappointed players* had and just kind of picks them all up, never to return to GW or its abortive reboots again. It's very sad for GW anyways.

I love BFG so getting to get some of the new ships from Rogue Trader for it would be awesome.
There is a pretty strong Epic scene quietly continuing in the background still, or so I gather.
There is, in fact there is a strong community behind it and tournaments still taking place. I just booked a ticket to epic at cancon, which is the Australian nationals tournament.
It's a far better balanced game than 40k ever was.
Every game meets that criteria.
Now confirmed as a reality
http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2015/11/specialist-games-returns-gw-confirms.html
GW is apparently creating a new division that will include ForgeWorld and assorted sideline properties and old specialist games.
Who knows how long till something actually gets produced and released though, and it is still GW, so probably outrageous prices and limited, self contained box games like Dreadfleet and Space Hulk, not ongoing wargames with plentiful expansions.
I would bet on Blood Bowl as the first thing we see from it.
Man, I thought for sure it was a hoax. Still, my stance has not changed. I cannot bring myself to give GW another dime. They lost all of my trust and good will with Age of Sigmar.
These sounds like the same sort of "specialist games" that they periodically release with no follow up support, like Space Hulk, Dreadfleet and whatever that Assassin force came in. If they aren't doing a major line of new products I won't be interested.
So, it sounds like GW's might be stumbling out of the Kirby-induced haze. I mean, I've been involved with the GW thing since... maybe '97, give or take a year. This is new, and not in that Dreadfleet "Tab Clear" kind of way. But I'm not going to be sacrificing Armada for it despite my affinity for the atmosphere in those old games. GW has regained my attention but they sure haven't regained my trust.
Warhammer Forge burned me pretty bad and I'm still bitter about Age of Sigmar (come on, that was this year. My memory's not great, but it's not that terrible). There will need to be something more than a splash release to re-engage me. BFG and its likes are/were fun, but the system is showing its age. If they can modernize that game and make the behemoth intuitive, then that's great. It's no secret that GW's stuff is often fun in spite of its rules, rather than because of them. On the other hand, they can be pretty fulfilling from a creative-outlet perspective.
Specialist Games had a little bit for everyone of every stripe, so even if I utterly loath everything about Bloodbowl, others have it. Choice is a good thing. Now that so many other companies have filled that void, it may be too late if they're content to rest on their laurels without offering any positive innovation or commitment to significant long term community involvement. All sounds kinda' familiar, eh?
I'm kind of glad I was wrong, maybe they'll focus on campaigns and some fun stuff apart from the mantra they've been extolling this past few years. I guess I'm going to have a very strange Necromunda project on my hands even if it's spawned from bits boxes and sculpting.
If they hire someone competent to re-jig the rules, apply their model making power and THEN don't make it heinously overpriced I might be interested......
I think i'd rather play the new game that's coming out though, and continue to play Armada on the tabletop.
A few things intrigue me that aren't getting discussed (here, at least).
1 - They are saying this is a "Specialist Design Studio". In other words, this is a different group of people than handle 40K and Age of Sigmar. A lot of what made FW products better than the GW main these last several years was that there was a different design studio with different oversight and different goals than the primary GW design studio. This is an encouraging thought.
2 - Contrary to the above, the initial Facebook announcement said that this new design studio is going to include ForgeWorld, which could be a reorganization that will bring FW more tightly under the control and oversight of the GW board of directors, which is the problem the regular design studio has. So instead of this being a good thing, GW might just be sabotaging the one decent department they still have.
Given GW's track record. I know which I am betting on.

What if... GW suddenly changed it's business policy, and became this customer-friendly company that everyone could love? One that put out a few main lines, well balanced and thought out, and a host of specialist games that had full company support and long lifespans? That would be great.

What if monkeys suddenly flew out my butt?....
BTW, the monkeys are by far the likely.
I'd love for a new BFG with Armada/x wing style rules, but given GW's price point at the moment, I'd rather not spend double what I do for FFG's products with worse rules. We'll see how it goes I guess.

That would be amazingly awesome.
And pretty much totally impossible until the entire management of the company has been fired and replaced.
I love the world of Warhammer, the old one, mostly the older the better and that goes for 40k as well. The worlds are fun, tongue planted firmly in cheek in a very British way. One of my favorite roll play settings. I have several Warmaster armies, a couple of BFG fleets and two small Epic Armageddon armies.
If this news is true and not just some PR/internal reorganization BS then the only thing I can hope for from them is that they produce some awesome looking minis. They have some strong competition though. Given the choice between off-brand minis and GW minis of similar quality and cost I would go with the off-brand.
My hope of hopes is that GW will finally figure out just how incompetent they are and stop doing anything... at all. Just license their IP to competent companies like FFG.
^2
Or go belly up, and get bought up by such a company.
You all keep telling me, that GW is expensive, but is it anymore expensive than FFG stuff?
You all keep telling me, that GW is expensive, but is it anymore expensive than FFG stuff?
Yes, significantly so.
One of GW's (primary, who knows what the new specialist games will be like) games, you have to spend close to $200 US just to get the basic game rules and the army list for a single faction. Then you start buying (the overpriced) miniatures (which require glue and paint and modelling tools to assemble). $2000-$3000 for an army in a single faction is not at all unheard of. You can buy everything for X-Wing for, what?, $600-$700.
$75 for a single tank (you'll probably want a couple)
$140 for a knight titan (the equivalent of a CR-90)(again, they have special rules that make having 3 better)
$23 for a single, 28mm character figure
The prices for the units of human sized figs are... tolerable. Not great, but not off the charts stupid either, but their prices for the large figs are just ridiculous, and they seem to deliberately skew the rules so that you have to take such models to have a chance at wining a game.
Then, of course, they are currently following the ST:Attack Wing model of allowing cross-faction forces, which means you are going to want models from several different armies, and the army books to go with them.
Edited by ForgottenloreThe shelves I need to store my 40k collection on are worth more than the entire amount I spent on Armada, several times over.
