Playing with yourself

By Promise Memory, in X-Wing

Ok guys, I'm looking for some advice for a time strapped x wing fiend that can't always get a game in with a friend. I'm not interested in setting up Vassel, but more in a logical way to play against myself. I'm sure this topic has come up once or twice before, so I'm sure someone has a great method to help scratch the itch.

It just takes a ton of mental strength to not constantly second guess the other side's moves when you're playing and constantly be going "well if he's doing that then this ship should do this". Same reason why playing chess against yourself is really hard.

I guess you could pick two strategies for how each side moves and then roll a die to determine which one happens so there's some uncertainty.

I haven't tried it yet, but the cooperative campaign is looking really interesting. It won't necessarily be good practice for tournaments, if you're in to that sort of thing, but it looks like a solid way to enjoy your ships and fly them around at home.

I just haven't done it yet because it's looking kind of pricey to print out all the stuff you need. One day.

There used to be a program out there that I can't find at them moment where you would put in you opponents ship type, and based on that ships relation to your ships it would give you a random but somewhat decent movement and action.

I will set objectives for each side based off of a particular build. So, something like attack the weakest ship or attack the points pig, etc. Then, when I plan for each side, I go back to that objective and plan accordingly. Oh, and I plan in reverse activation order hopping back and forth from side to side. The app Shenannigan posted looks very interesting however.

I have played matches with myself but that have been before a tournament just to get a feel how a list will be to face and to practice and testing some deployments and first turn manouvers.

If you can't find opponents their are some online alternatives that I think are more fun in the long run.

Doesn't that make you go blind

There have been a few attempts to create a solo play experience for this game. There is a co-op mode that has been really good, but can't seem to remember the link.

Here you go!

Co-op campaign that can be played by yourself. Comes with an AI system for enemy TIE fighters :)

When I practice alone, I'll just rotate the dial on the enemy ship randomly and place it down without looking. Then when it's that ship's turn, I'll look at the dial and use that as my guiding direction, but then pick what the best choice is in going that direction. Delivers decent moves with unpredictable decisions.

I don't get to play against others as often as I would like (busy life, kids, job) so I play against myself more often than live matches. The two methods I use to try and keep things interesting are:

1. Matching up against meta's - like everyone, I have preferred lists so I match up against builds that have beaten me or are popular and therefore a possibility I will play them (ie, Thug TLT's & BroBots) and I keep practicing until I can beat them more often than not. Sometimes, if I've seen a youtube video where someone played that list, I will mimic what appears to be their play-style.

2. I have preferred lists and I match them against each other. As I plan to play these lists somewhere, sometime, it's actually kinda fun trying to out-think myself and truly get the most out of the lists. The trick is not modifying actions, dice or tactics to give either side an unfair advantage.

It's fun but no match for a good blaster at your side substitute for real competition.

Jokes aside, I'm not sure how to make X-Wing enjoyable for Solitare. One idea might be to throw down an insane obstacle field of bombs, rocks, and debris and see how well you can maneuver through it without hitting a thing. You'd probably also have to add some form of random movement to the obstacles for extra challenge and unpredictability.

I play the Heroes of the Aturi Cluster co-op campaign solo, simulating three players. It's quite engaging. It's not exactly great practice for standard 1v1 play, but it's still X-Wing and still awesome.

I play the list I want to practice and place all 'my' dials first. Then I go to the other side and set those dials with perfect knowledge of what I did. This is not realistic, but it really helps you finding the descisions that can be punished the least.

Just develop a split personel disorder. Then play.
Or place your dails, then hit yourself just hard enough to get short therm memory loss.

Aturi cluster... IF ONLY THEY HAD REBEL AND SCUM AI!!!!

I usually alternate which side does dial planning first, and try to force myself not to think about the moves planned for the other team. Usually 80% successful.

At least this way you could try a 'worst case' scenario for the list you want to test

I need a gif of me rolling the dice, if you roll/throw dice in a certain way it looks perfect for this thread.
