Rebel Starship force ideas

By Rebelj71, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Our group of four has each acquired a squadron of 12 ships, and we need to decide what types of ships they are.

So far, we have 2 people selecting B-Wings, I'm guessing the 3rd will pick Y-Wing. My question is to get another opinion on a good choice to add to this in terms of type of starship type. I am torn between X-Wings and the Y Wings.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Go Z-95's and argue they're modified with better shields, hyperdrive, etc and then point out you're more likely to find replacement parts since unless you flying a TIE these are the next most common starfighter available!

How well funded/supplied/supported are these rebels?

As a GM, I'd seriously present to them the back-end considerations over their various choices.

As copperbell indicated, parts (both OEM and aftermarket) as well as equipment and trained personnel to perform repairs are very easy to find nearly anywhere in the galaxy for a Z-95. Same goes for the Y-wing, though to a very slightly lesser extent. Part of the reason X-wings were so popular was their similarity in controls, parts, repairs, etc. to the Z-95, so they've also got that advantage going for them.

In contrast, the other rebel fighters, the A-wing and B-wing, are notorious for being prima donnas in terms of upkeep, often having malfunctions at the drop of a hat, and required complex, expensive, and time consuming repairs using hard-to-find, expensive parts that may only be available from their source (meaning that regular repair & resupply runs to the Roche asteroids may become a common theme for your B-wings when their gyros fall out of synchronization and alignment.

Just something to think on!

Spanner makes an excellent point in so far as keeping the fighters flying, with designs that are commonly available, so too are replacement parts. The other thing you might want to take into consideration is the make-up of your squadrons, with 2 people going B-Wings, and a third possibly going Y-Wings, you've got the makings of a great Attack Wing, but you don't really have any dog-fighting cover. Strategically you would want at least a squadron of Z-95 Heavies, X-Wings, or A-Wings to cover them on their attack runs so they don't get chewed to pieces by faster, more maneuverable (aka able to "Gain the Advantage") TIE's.

To put it in real world air force terms, you've got the A-10's now you need the F-16's.

My son loves the H Wing from Stay on Target. Holds 3 in some comfort, 4 cramped. It has linked ion blasters and a turreted laser cannon plus you get a linked proton torpedo launcher. Sure it's a cow but it's a reasonably fast cow. It would make a good command unit for a squadron with the short range comms and sensors.

I'd suggest the Z-95 Heavies from Stay on Target.

They're a step-up from the standard Z-95, still have many of the benefits of the general Z-95 that hydrospanner above noted, but also have added features like an integrated hyperdrive and astromech support. They're not quite as boss as an X-Wing, but they come pretty close and are probably easier on a Rebel squadron's budget both in terms of maintenance and getting pilots up to speed on flying them.

While the B-Wings and A-Wings may be the "new hotness," they're also not remotely as common as even the Y-Wing (also known as the Alliance workhorse, and in Legends the newer ships had very high maintenance requirements and were for fairly specific mission roles. A large part of the X-Wing's success was that while it was first and foremost a space superiority fighter, it was also flexible enough to cover other mission roles in a pinch; it wouldn't be as good as a dedicated ship, but it will still work pretty well.

The Z95-Heavy doesn't have the same degree of flexibility as the X-Wing, but it's still a pretty solid general purpose fighter. It could be viewed as something of a "poor man's X-Wing" but when you're as desperate for resources as the Rebel Alliance, you take what you can get.

In addition to the above, it's also good to consider where you are located. Z-95s and Y-Wings are pretty ubiquitous in various locations, and in fact might even be ignored by Imperial forces if nothing is out of place.

X-wings, and more importantly A-wings and B-wings, attract Imperial attention, especially the heavier fighter. Those fighters would be an indicator that there was Rebel activity in the area. I wouldn't doubt if that was used as evidence for requests for additional resources. Especially if it is a significant number of them (heck, the recent Rebels episode shows what happens when you have just one B-Wing).
