Generics are still good to bring along because of the low cost. One good tactic, though, is to accompany them with a named squadron that has Escort. Even if your opponent kills the named Escort squadron, they stay on the board still preventing attacks on the generics until the next turn.

That seems broken for sure. One named squadron could soak up an entire combats worth of dice like a black hole. I would argue that still on the table or not, it has no more hitpoints to require it dying therefore I may shoot new targets.

I think you can take him with the escort pilots as said or some of the squishier pilots like tycho. Rebel aces are very strong and if im running a squadron build I'm looking at Rieekan or Dodanna

For one its still difficult to absorb an entire round of attacks unless your opponent gifted you with the situation. As they are still on the table and not destroyed though escort still applies. You can house rule it if you feel like you should but I think rules as written it stands.
