Spider Poison Rule Question

By Unquist, in Battlelore

A question came out of a game I played with some friends last night about the spider and its lore. I apologize if this is super basic, but I looked through the creature compendium and searched the forums and couldn't really find a specific answer.

Let's say the spider has powered up it's poison attack. I.e. in a previous combat it rolled two lore symbols and stored both of them. Now, it's attacking a blue unit and it rolls a blue shield and a miss. The blue shield clearly does a hit.

1) Do you choose to poison the unit or is this an automatic consequence of scoring a hit when you've got two lore stored?

2) If you choose to poison the unit, does the spider lose the two lore it had stored up? In other words, if it chooses to poison the unit, does it now have to roll two lore symbols in future battles before the ability gets charged up again?

It seemed like the web spell clearly required a player to "spend" and lose lore to use it, but we weren't entirely clear if that was the case for the poison ability.

Thanks!

From page 43 of the rulebook, "As soon as a Creature meets the necessary Lore requirement for a given special power, it MAY unleash that power." Therfore, use of the power is optional. However, with the spider, you can only store up to two Lore at a time. Any additional lore rolled must be taken into your Lore goblet and cannot be used for the spider's special powers.

Yes, Lore is used up when the spiders poison ability. From page 44 of the rulebook, "Any Lore tokens with the Creature are returned to the Lore pool as soon as the special power for which they were kept is triggered or when the Creature is eliminated."
