Minimun age to play x wing

By Hexdot, in X-Wing Off-Topic

One of my best friend's oldest son is aged 11. Quite smart, avid reader, and of course the x wing minis displayed in our gaming room are quite interesting to him. Perhaps he is too young to start playing, but I think he is ready. If he can play Descent second edition, he can play x wing.

Two Basic Sets (TFA), one A, B and Y, one Interceptor, Advanced abd Bomber. A copy.of our master archive of cards to print ( sorry FFG / EDGE, we will expend money on ships but not on cards ) and ready to have some fun.

I think this is enought to keep him busy, next year Falcon, Boba and more friends

Anakin showed us how you can pilot a ship at an even younger age. The Force seems strong in your friend's son, he can certainly pilot those ships ;)

Also showed us how bad child actors can really be.

My son is 10 and plays very well. He is constantly surprising me with some of his moves. For example, if there is a stressed pilot, don't always expect him to do a green maneuver next turn. However, speaking of child actors, you should expect some over the top celebrations when he does something awesome hahahaha. I've had to mentor him to "tone it down" before taking him to the game store to play others.

My purpose is to include a range of ships wide enought to play Imps vs Rebels, 5 Rebels plus 7 Imps I think is enought. Two basics are needed to provide two sets of rulers plus 6 red and 6 green dice. But I am open to better ideas. Perhaps 13 ships in total, but no more.

The idea is to give him enought minis to play, not a starter to expend more money.

I think 10 and older is fine. Any younger I find that the game doesn't hold their attention and they just want to play with the models.

My son played at 8 without issue. Pick light lists. Fat Han and Luke vs. Howlrunner and the named Ties for example. Fun, thematic, and you'd be amazed how much more the game holds their attention when they are turning you into space dust.

I sometimes just want to play with the models and I am 41.

Me too. 42

Then you see the kids who are playing Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle on Gotham, and your faith in child actors is restored.

The only rebel ships I have are the X-wings from both starter sets. My Imperial stuff stays in my super awesome transport case (aka a plastic bag), and the Rebels are on my desk. Every now and then, when I am waiting for something to load, I will grab the X-wings and make wooshing sounds as I fly them through "dogfights." At 28.

Pfft I've given up on gotham, flash and arrow are both far superior dc series.

Gotham has burnt through most iconic villains in one season and I hear Bruce Wayne is going to start vigilante adventures...just no.

I think it's a pretty easy game to learn compared to others. The biggest memory issues for new players in my experience tend to be A. What happens with obstacles and B. What happens with overlapping ships. Anything else is okay because it tends to be worded or shown directly on the dials or cards.

Also helps that X-wing is such a fast-paced game and that there's the Star Wars hook to get new players interested.

I taught an 8-year old to play a while ago, and he grabbed the basics pretty quickly. There's no real age limit on this game.

Well, there is an age limit. My eldest is two at the moment. She probably will make sounds before piling all the plastic violently together :)

First rule of X-Wing:

Shoot them with the pointy end.

If you can manage that, the rest should be doable.

I just pictured him leaping down from a rooftop, landing in the middle of a gang of criminals and snarling "I'm Bruce Wayne!" (but with a normal teen my-balls-haven't-dropped-yet voice.) And the criminals just kinda stand and stare at him dumbfounded.

There is a whole toy based on that: :D

So no different then when I played against my drunk brother in law?

Well, I do not know the exact state of drunkness (is this a word?) of your brother in law when he gets really drunk.

But our daughter would crash it all together with the correct amount of enthousiasm, after running through the living room saying: ´´Wheeeeeee!!´ :D

Our youngest daughter is 7 months old and just learned how to hit things repeatedly. Not yet entirely ready I would say :P
