Jake's not Soontir

By GamerTnT, in X-Wing

Help me forum wisdom, you're my only hope.

At world's I faced two Jake builds with my 4 scum TLTs.

I'd played practice matches against Soontir and I knew that these guys can get up in your donut at the end game and easily take out 1-2 Ys. So, I know I had to go for Soontir first.

But is Jake the same? He doesn't have three Attack dice so he might not be the same threat.

I think chasing him cost me in one game (Jake, Miranda and a Guardian). In the other (Jake and Han), I manged to get him.

Is this the right strategy? Should you take out the arc dodger first? Even if it's Jake?

Jake has less firepower than Soontir, but has very similar maneuverability and action economy. Jake is also a good bit cheaper than Soontir if you don't take prockets. If you do take prockets you do get one mega-shot with him.

It depends if he has Proton Rockets or not and what the rest of your opponent's list looks like. With your list you want to take out firepower a quickly as possible. Odds are Jake will get his prockets off at the very least and really mitigate most (if not all) of your damage. If you can erase some points off the board more quickly by focusing other ships then go for that. The key is commitment to a target. IF you commit to Jake I would try to set up at least two rounds of fire from at least 3 ships each round. He is so quick that if you go after him he could slip away leaving you with wasted shots while the rest of your opponent's list tears you up.

I like jake alot. He is a great ace for 28 points. In general though, I think chasing is a bad idea. If the person you are chasing tanks your shots, you are likely to lose.

In both cases i maneuvered so that I had Jake mostly isolated. Figuring I needed concentrated fire to get him. Because Soontir can kill TLT Ys in the end game. Can Jake do the same? He had a procket but that is only one shot.

I think isolating an arc-dodger is a good idea, especially if it has a punch like Soontir. But I'm not sure Jake should be treated the same way,

I'd of worried about Miranda first in that build, and gone after Jake after the main damage output was gone.

But yeah Jake is pretty tough to shoot down , him sticking around can be a real danger, but he does throw less damage dice.

That was my results at World's. When I chased and missed, I lost. When I chased him and got him, I won. Though missing was dice dependant.

Ive solo'd a firespray with jake. I imagine he could kill a couple of y wings by himself. It just takes a little longer. I think you just have to hope your 50 plus points of y wings can get a 28 point A. Im no store champ though.

miranda worries me more. Esp AFTER he uses Prockets.

And miranda conveniently doesn't tank TLT very well: 1 dice (basically none). Regens 1 shield, 1 c3po: 2 a turn.

That's only 1 TLT.

With good flying you should be trying to get 3 TLT on her every turn. Maybe losing one TLT attack cuz R1 and they're good at jumping in donut.

So.. you should be doing 4 damage to Miranda a turn...

miranda attacks

-4 = 5

miranda regen 6

-4 = 2

regen 3

-4 = dead.

3 turns. Well. It is miranda. =/

4 TLTs aint no auto win.

Honestly, I keep feeling like the hybrid lists benefit from TLT better. Something else to dissaude them from going after the TLTs, and let them get dealt damage over time.
