How to Convert a 40k/DND group

By DaKrimsonBarun, in X-Wing

Badass GM's like yours truly use star wars D20 and x-wing and make a narrative campaign, where the objective based x-wing games influence the D20, and the D20 influences x-wing.

You mean the WotC rules? Revised or Saga?

Revised. I never did try Saga. A few modifications a'la pathfinder of course. spot/listen became perception etc.

For commanding larger battles. Rogue trader was originally used. A bolter and a blaster having the same stats, stormtrooper armour being obviously a 4+... So the players used their skils or did special ops stuff in D20, for sending squads of their troops to do stuff rogue trader, and for air support for either X-wing.

It worked really well.

In truth i'd love to run this setup again. Small rebel cell, maybe with a corvette or even a frigate. A few rookie pilots (who of course gain their own XP) a platoon of marines (earn xp).

Repair was an important stat, high repair rolls meant you could add more than one modification to those starting y-wings (which of course got ridiculous) Astromechs had to be liberated etc.

Med checks could mean that marine davis, who took a blaster bolt securing that GR75 wreck isn't dead, just out for next so long.

Translating skills for when the players were DIRECTLY involved was difficult.

If I did it again maybe i'd assign players base stats on rogue trader and X-wing, and then give them so many skill points/feats for noncombat in D20.

In any D20 SWRPG, switching to another system for starship or vehicle combat seems a good idea, it was the achilles heel of all three versions.

Yes, and X-wing was the obvious choice.

Replacing DnD is not really intended. However dnd is weakening rapidly in our group and the players ar going back to 40k. The leader of the group is going to let us give them a demo game in december. Thanks guys.

Best way to convert people to X-Wing?

...

Let em play X-Wing!

I like head swaps.

I recommend selling each player on it individually, adjusting your sell based on what their current gripe about 40k is. Here are a few examples:

Jim doesn't like painting/assembling his own minis, casually mention how nice it is to be able to grab a new X-wing and be able to play with it 5 min after buying it.

John does not have a lot of time during the week due to having kids so mention how fast games usually can go.

Peter complains about how heavy his army is due to a large number of models/they are metal/ the storage/whatever so you bring a normal 4 ship list in a small container with your essentials

I could keep going on and on but trying to sell a whole group using the same pitch won't work, granted there is a lure if everybody gets into the game with all of there friends but realistically it never works that way

I just remembered only one of them has a painted army...

Lol...

Don't sell X-Wing as if its a product and you're a rep. That's just gonna suck all the fun out of it.

Just be a cool dude who teaches people how to play X-Wing and the cult... Erm, flock, yes flock, shall flourish.

For my group, the selling point was $15 miniatures, pre-painted. Hellova deal compared to the 40k they already played. Typical 40k player spends thousands of dollars. Why spent thousands when u can spend hundreds?
