In the following videos we fly the X-Wings from both core sets vs the Tie Fighters from both core sets. We even restricted ourselveds to upgrades only available in the core sets.
Interestingly enough, both core sets seem to be evenly matched in their own right. Before the Force Awakens core set came out there were many forums that said, "Go ahead and buy two core sets to have doubles of everything!" Now you can just by the two different core sets and come out with a total of 4 different types of ships, different upgrades and a plethora of pilots to choose from! In our battle of the two core sets they both performed very well. Tie Fighters and Tie/FOs fly very well with each other, as with the X-Wings, because they pretty much have the same maneuvers. Of course the newer ships have a couple of fancy moves, the T turn, and the S turn.
If you were sitting back wondering if the original core set was made outdated by the new one, I can safely say that is not the case. There are gems in both core sets. Luke Skywalker and R2-D2 are always worth having in your squadron. Poe Dameron in The Force Awakens core set is a new favorite amongst competition players. At the last tournemant I attended, I and several other Rebel players were fielding Poe as their main wingman. Now put Poe and R2 together and you may just have an unstoppable force.
The legitimacy of both core sets will be revielled in these videos especially at the end of the battle report as Poe Dameron, "A named Beast," as Christopher states, attempts to get a clean shot off at an Academy Pilot Tie Fighter.
So here are the videos. The first is a review of the two core sets we do on our popular Board Game Review segments. The second is a full battle report. We didn't use Luck or R2 in the videos because the cards in the original core set Robert brought over were left at a friends house. But you can still get a feel for both in action!
