World of Ice and Fire Expansion?

By DoctorToboggan, in General Discussion

Hi everyone,

New to the game here so I apologize if this is a dumb question, but what is the likelihood of FFG releasing a World of Ice and Fire expanded universe-themed expansion? The guidebook introduced a ton of awesome source material to draw from, and I think creating a deck themed around the original Dance of the Dragons between the Rhaenyra's blacks and the seperatist greens. All those dragons and Targaryens, the thought of this happening gives me goosebumps!

Who knows? In past incarnations of the game they've dipped their toes into the backstory with cards like The Laughing Storm, Balerion, and Rhaegar Targaryen.

But from what I understand, the first chapter pack cycle is based around the first book in the series. The first chapter pack is called "Taking The Black" because one of the first events that happens is Jon Snow deciding to join the Night's Watch. The second pack is "The Road to Winterfell" as the next event is Robert and Cersei's visit to the Starks. Et cetera.

So, the writing's on the wall that the next several chapter pack cycles would very likely be themed around A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, A Dance with Dragons, The Winds of Winter, and A Dream of Spring. So it will likely be 2017 at the soonest before they run out of published material, possibly 2018 (especially since there's probably going to be a 2-month gap between cycles where they'll put out Faction-oriented Deluxe sets.) I too think an "EU" themed chapter pack cycle would be cool, but while anything's possible, I wouldn't bet on it.

I doubt we'll see a full expansion focusing on the World of Ice and Fire fluff. It's cool, but not a real sales driver--people want to see the people and events from the books/series.

Where we COULD see use of a lot of that material, though, is in the House-themed Deluxes that we will (probably) be getting. In that setting, it would make a lot more sense for them to dig deeper into the history of that House and its allies and the events that shaped their place in the narrative.

What has been said in various podcasts is that tournament champions are no longer permitted to dip into the pre-book time period for card designs. This would suggest that future expansions will not focus on the history of Westeros.

That's kind of sad--I'm sure it's a rights issue with HBO considering a prequel series but that's disappointing all the same--especially if Thrones had that content in the past.

It never had too much of that content, not like a whole cycle or anything. But at any rate, FFG's contract is with GRRM for the ASOIAF book license. What HBO does is pretty irrelevant.

Maybe.

I never played Thrones 1.0 but I got the impression that while there wasn't A LOT of that content, it was at least somewhat present over a long period of time. And FFG was okay with that. The fact that their behavior has changed now is indicative of something.

While I know that HBO is not directly involved in the licensing of Game of Thrones to FFG, they are certainly a presence that influences that relationship. What I meant by my comment was that if HBO is considering a possible prequel series (which they've said they are) then it becomes doubly important that GRRM and Harper-Collins defend their copyright (even if neither GRRM or his publisher give two hoots about FFG's specific use) for their upcoming (or more likely, ongoing) negotiations with HBO.

I don't know what FFGs license covers, but even if it only covers the main novels, that would still leave them access to some prenovel stuff like Rheagar, Lyana, the doom of valaria. Basically they should have access to anything that is mentioned in the main novels. With that said, I wouldn't mind a splash of a character or plot here and there from pre game of thrones but I would like the game to focus on the novels
