Finger measuring

By LouisCypher, in X-Wing Rules Questions

We all know it's forbidden to measure with your fingers when planning a move/boost/barrel roll/whatever, but me and my younger brother could not find the exact statement in the new core rulebook set (the one saying you have to plan it in your mind).

Can someone give me the exact reference, in the new rule book?

Thanks in advance!

In the Planning Phase on page 15 of the Rules Reference it tells you to select your maneuver. Since it makes no mention of measuring, measuring is not part of choosing your maneuver.

Contrast this with acquiring a Target Lock or determining Range when making an attack. Both specify how and when to measure.

As a follow up most rule books are more focused on telling you how to do things, rather than telling you how not to do things.

Yeah it falls under pre-measuring. When they say you cannot pre-measure, they mean in any way, not just with the templates.

It'd take a lot of space to list all the things you could use to pre-measure and say no to them.

"Each selection on the maneuver dial has a corresponding maneuver template, which measures the ship’s movement during the Activation phase. During the Planning phase, players cannot use maneuver templates in order to “test” where ships will end up. Instead, they must plan their maneuvers by estimating their ships’ movement in their heads."

Yeah, you're both right and i know it. My question is about this sentence, which was in the old rulebook and that I'm unable to find in the newest one.

Did they get rid of it?

I did a search on estimate and estimation in the PDF of the rules but found no matches for the above, so it appears they did not carry it over.

I think the original rule should suffice. There's absolutely no change to the method involved, regardless of whether or not they included or excluded that sentence. If you want to play like that and claim it's no longer in the rulebook, you're going to be accused of being a cheat.

There's a ton of things the rules don't say you can do. That's because the rules are written to tell you what you can do, and if you don't read a rule that expressly says you can do something, then you likely can't.

Does page 4 of the new FAQ (3.2.3) "Measuring Range" apply?

Measuring Range
Players may only measure range and/or use the range ruler to determine
whether a ship is inside or outside of a firing arc at the following times:
When a ship becomes the active ship during the combat phase, the active
player can measure range from the active ship to any enemy ships before
declaring one as its target.
When a player declares a ship’s ability that requires another ship (or ships)
to be at a certain range, the player trying to resolve the ability can measure
range from their ship to any valid ships before resolving the ability.
After declaring the intended target of a target lock action, the active player
may measure range to the intended target, and only to the intended target.
