400-point "next step" demo lists

By dragonstout, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi,

So: suppose I demo the game to a pal with the suggested "learn to play game", and after we get used to that, we want to try out the full 400-point game, but are overwhelmed by all the list possibilities to start with and just want to get a taste. What would be a couple of good, well-rounded, not extreme, 400-point lists for us to try? We don't at all need the lists to be competitive...not at all. We're just looking for something kind of like the lists FFG posts every so often for X-Wing (and they posted a few for Armada around the release of the first wave; everyone always complains about these lists because of course they aren't at all competitive), that aren't too complicated and have plenty of room for improvement (which is good since it gets us thinking and itching to start making our own lists).

Any suggestions using wave 1 alone? Or with some wave 2?

Thanks!

When I teach, I use lists with ships, an Admiral, and generic squadrons. No upgrades or aces. Works quite well and with a variety of ships. A few things to remember:

For rebels, Neb-bs take more skill to be used well, PARTICULARLY when used in combination with the other types of ships. If you don't have success with the right away, seek some strategy threads.

For both sides, encourage use of the Navigation command (and squadron commands for certain ships).

You'll know your ready for upgrades when people start thumbing through the cards getting excited about certain ones they want to try.

Try a 400 point list with a 100+ point bid?

Jumping from 170 to 300 is big enough, especially if you are going upgrade light.

For a second game, you could give the new guy Mottie on the ISDii Relentless with a Tractor. A GSDii w/ Expanded launchers. Then, fill in with 9 TIE LN for 300 points

Easy to run and very forgiving. Plus, lots of dice rolling. :)

First game, no objectives. Next few, pick objectives at random and slowly replace TIEs with upgrades. Once you think he's ready, let him design a force and pick his own Objectives to go with.

Since 400 is not out I HIGHLY recommend 300 points. It will help you get used to the games mechanics, the ships and their differences and other such information. After that 400 is easy to jump into because it is the same information but on a bigger scale.
