The meta is dead! Long live the meta!

By Maturin, in Star Wars: Armada

Well, now that we can expect to see A-wings springing up everywhere, it's time to start getting ahead of the meta! What are your thoughts on beating the horribly overpowered and broken phenomenon that is the current World Champion List?

Point defense.....definitely point defense...

TIE fighters have always been the most cost efficient way to kill squadrons. That might work.

The raider will also murder A-wings, and have the speed to catch them. Other than the raider, relying on capital ships is not a great idea.

Raider + Ordnance Experts + TIE escort = dead A-Wings

Really, it's not that A Wing swarms are some hidden secret megaweapon, it's that the GenCon Special puts all its eggs in the "all ship" basket, and that's a mistake.

Even a few cursory TIE fighter squadrons could have made a massive difference (And prevent it from being TOTALLY out-deployed for that matter).

I agree. Any fighters, even if they died in two turns would have prevented a few points of damage.

Fel, Howlrunner, and Tie Advances.

it's hilarious to me the about face the community has done on squadrons. Joining those of us on the light side that have been playing then all along trying to convert the non believers.

I liked squadrons before it was cool to like squadrons. ;)

Good grief does nobody have an original bone in their body?! When will people understand that playing well is how you win worlds - not the list you take. Come up with an idea and fly the pants off it. That is what this guy did. Also I find it intriguing that the most successful lists also seem to be very light on upgrades and have a clear focus. There is no fat, the list has been trimmed and optimised - that is the key aspect of the list building. Make it suit your game plan and cut out cost to make it as lean as possible. You won't win worlds by rehashing a successful list because it isn't the list that won worlds.

Haha, chill-ax dude. This whole thread is my half-joking attempt to out-knee-jerk the inevitable reaction to today's win. Thus my smiley face in the OP.

Fel, Howlrunner, and Tie Advances.

Howlrunner wants TIE fighters or interceptors. Advances can't do crap with her ability.

I've gone back and forth on the TIE Advanced but these days I'm back in the "Why bother?" camp.

Won my first tournament with a squadron heavy list when the local groups were buying the GenCon Special meta. Ever since then we've had a diverse and lively squadron scene.

They've got a learning curve, but the game is greatly enriched by their inclusion. Give it a few months and we'll all look back on the "no squadrons" days and laugh.

I'm laughing already.

At least people took your bait. I got zero response to my "call" to ban A-wings in the A-wing thread. Perhaps people couldn't tell if it was a joke or not. (It was)

I, for one, welcome our new Raider overlords.

By using the word 'meta', you're saying that skill at flying doesn't matter, and that anyone who can copy and paste a list from the internet can win at this game! You should be ashamed of this and be made to believe that skill matters and that someone with sufficient skill can win with this game flying a Nebulon-B swarm, and if you don't believe that, you're actually someone who deeply hates this game.

I say, lock em down and blast with double blue flak.

What's wrong with a Neb-b swarm? ;)

Don't forget the the YT-1300 and Gallant Haven with Jan.

The meta hasn't changed even the tiniest amount. The top 4 was an even mix of all ship and squadron lusts, and the finals were just a reversal of age con.

The FORUM meta might have changed, but that honestly has nothing at all to do with the actual game.

This.

Plus, a cloud of A-wings hardly means that any and all squadrons are viable. It just proves that A-wings are fast, cheap, decent dogfighters and have a black anti-ship dice.

Well put.

All truth being told, skill can beat a list. That doesn't mean any list can overcome by skill alone. Ultimately this IS a dice game and sometimes you are going to have a bad day.

I went through a flux of fighters are garbage/fighters are good in the 4 months I've been playing. I think the ultimate response here is that you should run some fighters in every list. Rebels can get away with far less than Imperials in Wave 1 IMO.

This is a fun game with a lot of balance. And there isn't any wrong answers. Only building to suit your style of play.
