Need help with a squad for my first tournament.

By Gamer4000, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm going to play in a 100 point tournament, but I haven't played in one before. I have played some casual games, but I usually lose. Can someone please help me set up a squad for this tournament?

Here is what expansions I have. I have everything that comes with the expansions, but nothing else. I would be able to buy an expansion or 2 to make a better team.

1 Core Set (2 TIE fighters, 1 X-Wing, Luke and Biggs + other stuff. Not the new one)

2 X-wing Expansions (the one with Wedge)

1 Y-Wing Expansion

1 A-Wing Expansion

1 Imperial Aces Expansion (the one with the Royal Guard TIE Interceptors)

1 TIE Advanced Expansion (the one with Darth Vadar and Swarm Tactics)

1 TIE Phantom Expansion

One team I have had fun with is the Phantom, and 2 Interceptors, but I have heard that the Phantom is hard to play correctly. I'll also play rebels. I have tried Biggs, Luke, and the Y-wing before, but I'm not sure how good it is. Can someone help me set up a team?

Anyone?

You've got a pretty limited pool there. You can really only make a few different 100 point combinations from what you've got. What may be the "best" list, might not bring you the most success. Your best bet is to keep it simple, focus on your flying, and try to minimize mistakes. This list below isn't flashy, but it has good firepower, and a decent about of shields and hull. Work on flying in formation and focusing your fire to get enemy ships off the board. You've got two points left to play with, so toss in an astromech of your choice.

Red Squadron Pilot (23)

Red Squadron Pilot (23)

Wedge Antilles (29)

Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)

Total: 98

I'd upgrade one of the Reds to Biggs, to patch up the lacking survivablity of the rest of the list, especially Wedge.

If you do this have a look at the 2013 Worlds final to see someone really good with Biggs, and then pratice formation flying. Remember to focus your fire, take your actions and have fun!

"Whisper" (32)

Fire-Control System (2)

Tactician (2)

Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Darth Vader (29)

Squad Leader (2)

Carnor Jax (26)

Push the Limit (3)

Total: 100

You use the Squad Leader on Darth Vader to get Carnor Jax or Whisper out of trouble if they need it.

Don't be afraid to stress Carnor Jax, don't stress the Phantom.

Bowser's list is very solid. Here are a few other options that would require the purchase of a B-Wing expansion:

Wedge - X-Wing (Push the Limit, R2 Astromech)

Luke - X-Wing (R2-D2)

Ten Numb - B-Wing (Marksmanship)

99 points

Wedge - X-Wing (Swarm Tactics, R2 Astromech, Shield Upgrade)

Luke - X-Wing (Marksmanship, R2-D2)

Dagger Squadron Pilot - B-Wing (Fire-Control System, Hull Upgrade)

100 points

Gray Squadron Pilot - Y-Wing (Ion Cannon Turret, R2 Astromech)

Dagger Squadron Pilot - B-Wing (Fire-Control System)

Red Squadron Pilot - X-Wing

Green Squadron Pilot - A-Wing (Push the Limit, Hull Upgrade)

100 points

I think I'll experiment with Biggs, Red Squad, Wedge, and Gold Squad and see how that works for rebels. I might try a b-wing list at some point also.

Also have a few questions

What is formation flying?

What do you guys mean by focusing fire?

What do you guys think of Dagonet's Imperial List?

Is Bowser's rebel list okay even without torpedoes?

Should I only use the Ion Cannon on the Y-Wing?

I've heard of something called TIE Swarm, what is it, and is it any good for beginners?

Thanks for all the suggestions by the way.

Formation flying. Think Blue Angels or other aerial acrobatics team. Whatever pattern or "shape" the whole lot takes doesn't change, break down, or spread out as it maneuvers across the table. Its tricky to do, for me at least. Things like if two ships are side by side, the right one takes a Right 1 bank and the left one takes a Right 2 bank - now they are facing a different angle, but still right side by side.

Focus Fire. Target EVERYTHING at one target until it is dead. Then move on. Basically "Gang Up" on a single target.

TIE Swarm. Like 5-6 TIE Fighters. Usually a "decent" and possibly Named one with the rest being cheap as chips to up the body count. Eac ship is fragile, and each one doesn't put out a great deal of offense. BUT, the high body count mitigates individual fragility, and it also exponentially escalates the offensive power if flown in formation and focusing fire on single target.

I'm not a good list person, so I will defer those Qs to someone who can answer them.

1. Flying in formation: Check out this YouTube video for more details https://youtu.be/p3OjjNUu1hA

2. Focus fire means to concentrate your fire on a single enemy ship. If you do this you will kill their ships faster. Then you will have less ships shooting back at you. 90% of the time this is an advantageous strategy.

3. The imperial list is also good. It might even be a stronger list. But it has less margin for error. The ships are more maneuverable, but also fragile. In the hands of a skilled pilot they can be very strong. But even small mistakes can lead to them getting killed. Still, If that is your style, go for it. The best way to get better with them is to fly them.

4. Torpedoes can be used effectively, but most of the time they are more trouble than they are worth. Skip them for now.

5. A TIE Swarm is just what is sounds like, 5, 6, 7, or even a max of 8, TIE fighters in the same squad. They go for quantity over quality. Strength in numbers. It is an effective list. But managing that many ships can be daunting for a new player. Still, the best way to see if it is for you is to fly it.

I tried out the rebel list and actually won for once. I was thinking about changing a red squad to a rookie so I could put the droid on wedge that gives him a chance to regain the target lock after it is used. Is that a good idea?

That droid is pretty bad, sadly. That goes for a lot of wave 1 upgrades, they were very carefull back then (with the exception of R2-D2, who got really dangerous with ships with 3 native shields, like the E-Wing and T-70 X-Wing). What you could do is downgrade the Rookie and gíve the Y-Wing an R2-Astromech, really opens up the dial. Then you could give Determination to Wedge, which isn't really good on him, but a nice fit in your list and at the very least not damaging. A one point initiative bid isn't going to be all that usefull anyways.

If you enjoy your classic X-Wings, you should really look forward to the T-70 standalone expansion that is going to come with a 0 point modification exclusive to both X-Wings that allows you to discard your astromech when receiving a damage card, meaning it is a free shield to be used to either avoid death or a particularly nasty crit. It gets the X-Wing right up where it needs to be.

I'll try that. I forgot to mention that I might be able to buy the new core set if needed also.

Any other tips?

If you get the new core do yourself a favour and try out Wedge with PTL and BB-8! That is an insanely fun ship. Pick a green move, perform a free barrel roll, PTL of that for a focus, perform the green manouver and clear the PTL stress and then take a target lock. With your collection you could fit him into a squad like this:

http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Rebel%20Alliance&d=v3!s!0:18,-1,148:-1:-1:;4:-1,-1:-1:-1:;9:0,-1,-1,2:-1:-1:;32:-1:-1:-1:

Or this, so you get to use that sweet T-70 as well (it is a fantastic ship):

http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Rebel%20Alliance&d=v3!s!0:18,-1,148:-1:-1:;175:-1,-1,3,-1:-1:-1:;29:18,-1:-1:-1:

Those look fun. I'll get the core set and try them out.

Also, which damage deck do I use for tournaments? I heard the new core one is different.

Both are allowed officially, but sometimes the TO will determine one that everyone has to use (usually the new one). In FFG tournaments you will have the choice to bring one.

If you run secondary weapons, pilots with abilities or elite talents you should bring the new one, otherwise the old one gives you a tiny advantage. The old deck has a crit that makes you discard a secondary weapon. Devastating if you need one, blank if you don't have any. It also has one that makes you lose your pilot ability and elite upgrades, which is again potentially devastating for those who rely on that, while being blank for most generics. The new deck has new crits in place of those. Its general threat level is slightly higher, while being lower on variance.

Okay, Thanks.

Just got the core set. I'm going to try the new droid on wedge, or the Poe and Wedge team

Using Poe served me fairly well in my last tourny. He's fun to fly.

I wanted to try a large ship, so I got a Millennium Falcon. I heard that the falcon and either an x-wing or a y-wing is good. Any suggestions for squads with it? Or is it better not to use it?

Also, it all depends on what your goals and expectations are. There are some good competitive players in my area that I don't expect to be competitive with anytime soon (probably ever), but I just enjoy playing. If that's your feeling too, it doesn't matter as much--at least immediately--what expansions and upgrades you have. I had lots of ships just from collecting and my first tournament build was still terrible not from lack of ships but from lack of knowledge.

My advice is to keep it simple as far as upgrades and ships and only put in tricky stuff that is part of your overall strategy. I've been playing since September, maybe 15-20 games, and I still forget to use ordinance, upgrades, etc. sometimes.
