It's hosted at FFGs world headquarters which happens to be in the US. Hasn't this troll thread gone on long enough? I guess not I just posted to it.
World championship or just U.S. championship ?
does FFG have the game pieces in other languages? Want to pick me up some Deutsch fel.
Yes, and I think there's a german set out there.
Also correct me if I am wrong but didn't Francisco Berna Menendez make top 8, and isn't he from Spain or something like that?
Then there was this dude in the top 8 Przemyslaw Talach not sure his nationality.
So 2 out of 8 that is like 1 out of 4 which is 25% of the top 8.
Just sayin.
Travis Foss was Top 8 as well - He is Australian so that's makes 3/8 Internationals!
When 3/8 of the top players in the tournament are internationally based, accounting for some over representation of the host country, it is without a doubt fair to call it a world championship.
EDIT: Quoted for truth!
Edited by WarLaxI know some countries their distributor pays for the airfare
Sadly they don't in Canada.
If they did pay for hotel and flight I'd make the trip to Toronto for nationals
It's too bad it's in the same spot every year, but I can understand
Makes it hard for those of us who have families
Our vacation trips usually go to Japan as that is where my wife's family and kids grandparents are at.
It would be nice if they moved around
So I guess this game doesn't have any tournaments in Japan?
I've heard of groups playing, but out of all the countries I see, I never saw Japan
Surprised actually
Figure something like this be popular

The Spanish player in the top 8 had Spanish language cards, commentators made note of it.
You know, like the World Series is the culmination of the MLB season with their 29 U.S. teams and 1 Canadian one. And also the NBA.
World champs woo!!
A pretty large percentage of players in both those leagues are non-US natives. Especially in baseball.

Think it would be cool to host the tournament at the winners country of origin. That's just me. On the other haND, does FFG have the game pieces in other languages? Want to pick me up some Deutsch fel.
like most german players, I have several Fel-cards spare (the standard card from the fighter, just with german text. no bratwurst on it, though).
if you like, I'd be happy to trade with you (english would be okay, though personally I really would like to get my hands on some spanish, italian, russian etc cards) ![]()
Kari made it to top 16, and another player Siggi was placed at 30 after the first day - both quality players.
Both are from Iceland, but there were a few others attending from Iceland.
No Biggles cards?
Back the Worlds title, perhaps there could be some consideration next year for international players. Given the investment in travel folks from outside the US are faced with, (VISA's, bullet-planting rackets, etc., etc.,) perhaps it could encourage more international players to join.
Since the qualification process is "buy a ticket and be willing and able to travel to Minnesota on a random Tuesday in November" of course there are going to be more attendees from the US, and the upper Midwest even moreso. An amazing amount of FFG World Champions in less-popular games come from Minnesota and Wisconsin. Is it because that environment breeds better players, or because more people from those areas can just drive down for a couple days?
Give it time, guys. Magic has, perhaps, a stronger claim for having a legitimate world championship, but that's a much older game that generates a lot more revenue - it's been the CCG for at least 15 years, right? X-Wing will get there, especially with new Star Wars movies slated for release in each of the next 5 years.
For now, getting too wound up about non-US players being poorly represented in the biggest X-Wing tournaments is a little bit like those of us in the US being mad that the US isn't competitive in, say, the Rugby World Cup.
I'm sure FFG would love to see X-Wing become a global phenomenon...just keep buying ships and playing games!

Three of the top eight players were from outside the U.S.

Here's the thing, I don't think anyone wants X-wing to become Magic. In order to get the playerbase to support their tournament structure, you have to bring in the jerks only interested in the money. I do not want to taint our game with those jerks.

There's no need to be rude. Come on.
In my opinion, I don't yet see a need for the championship to be somewhere other than the US (or somewhere in Europe soon, maybe) as their player base is so much higher than other places. People playing X-Wing Miniatures in the US alone far outnumber any other country (dare I say the player base might be higher than all other countries combined? Maybe). Although some countries have an official championship structure in place and winners get a free ride to worlds, most don't and travel costs alone forbid higher participation. Still, we have had many people from countries other than the US taking part.
Having said that, this player density has changed a lot in the last year and is spreading out, so I assume that eventually we will see a worlds some place in Europe. Many countries don't even have an official FFG distributor. Here in Brazil, for example, we have had X-Wing Miniatures for less than a year (if you did not import them).
So the player base is growing exponentially and there is huge potential for growth. Thus, a worlds that is seeded in different places every year might not be so far off.
I seriously doubt Worlds will be held anywhere other than where it is. The cost to run it would rise astronomically and the planning, permits, etc would make the logistics nightmarish. If this happened, expect entry fees to triple.
Not to mention that the event isn't just about X-Wing - it's about all of FFG's games. In which case I feel it's kinda fair play for them to organise it in their back yard.
Plenty of representation from the international community. Hell, I was out past midnight drinking and playing oars games with a bunch of Germans and Australians!
And wasn't it a great party!
Top 16 included 4 non-Americans, 3 of whom won and went into top 8, including an Aussie!
Great work Trav!

I agree it will probably never move, now they can hold it on their own property and save a bunch of money. It's as likely to move to LA as it is to Paris.
NHL is he best I think there are less Americans then foreigners in that league.

That's a terrible example because the Hockey headquarters and hall of fame is in Toronto, not the US (when they need official NHL rulings in-game, they call Toronto). The "National" in NHL means Canada, not the US.
I understand the logistical reasons for holding World Championships in FFG's hometown and because of that player representation is gonna lean heavily towards the US and Europe but it would be nice if a thought could be spared towards us Asians and in particular South East Asian players. We have a pretty sizable player base within the SEA region alone and the community here is pretty dedicated and holds regular store and sanction tournaments throughout the year plus we have very few issues conversing in English. I know there have been a few players who have participated at the NA Championships during Gencon but so far I don't know of anyone from here who has ever made it to Worlds. The main factor I see that prevents us from going is the lack of sponsorship and the high cost of traveling all the way to the US. Perhaps this will change in the future but for now Asia is mostly left out of the loop.

The reason why they created Worlds at their HQ was because GenCon became too crowded.
And here I always thought we were talking about Coruscant.
