World championship or just U.S. championship ?
Would adding Continental Championships be redundant to nationals?
I'll be in Germany from Dec 18th to January 4th. In the Frankfurt area. I'm trying to make it up to Hannover to watch Bayern play when I'm there. I would trade when I'm there for sure.
Yes, and I think there's a german set out there.does FFG have the game pieces in other languages? Want to pick me up some Deutsch fel.
Think it would be cool to host the tournament at the winners country of origin. That's just me. On the other haND, does FFG have the game pieces in other languages? Want to pick me up some Deutsch fel.
like most german players, I have several Fel-cards spare (the standard card from the fighter, just with german text. no bratwurst on it, though).
if you like, I'd be happy to trade with you (english would be okay, though personally I really would like to get my hands on some spanish, italian, russian etc cards)
though I'm no soccer fan, the only reason to see "Bayern" is to see them lose! ;-P
do you travel by car in germany? I live in a small town not so far off cologne/Koblenz - should be more or less on a car's way from frankfurt to hannover; so maybe we could meet somewhere, have a game and/or talk nerdy stuff about a nerdy hobby we both seem to enjoy ;-)

No, why would they?
FFG just announced that next year's Worlds will be at the more neutral location of Alderaa.... ooooooohhh..... nevermind.

please: no. the weather there is horrible. raining cats and dogs.. and other stuff.
It would coincide nicely with the arrival of Armada wave 5: The Death Star

Bonn oder was? Meine familie kommt aus Giessen. Stone throw away if you live there. I probably will just head over with one of my family members. Any good FLGS?

I'll send a PM ;-)
Plenty of representation from the international community. Hell, I was out past midnight drinking and playing oars games with a bunch of Germans and Australians!
It was good fun and cool meeting the mind behind the ListJuggler and LadyLuck in person. Also, High Heavens was a great game and we are trying to get a copy of it.
I think we can conclude this thread with the following:- There were players from all across the globe present at the X-Wing tournament, probably likewise for the other tournaments.- There were three non-US players in the top 8, showing a healthy playing field, especially when compensating for ease of travel bias.- FFG is unlikely going to change the venue due to cost and logistics.- A European championship is desired to enable more people to play a top tier event. The game is looking good!
Yeah, Netrunner is showing quite a fair number of non-North Americans in the top table. So, there is a decent contingent at Worlds.
As for a European Championship, due to the different distributors, I think it may be difficult to arrange.
I thought there was a fairly good representation of non US gamers in the top bracket (being one of the top 8 myself), my other point is that if any of you have ever been to FFG's headquarters their gaming facility is probably the best on the planet, there was in excess of 400 gamers in their on some days and the atmosphere was great, they also sell beer and burgers inside the venue as well for cheap, and at one stage during the Swiss rounds the general manager of the store was going around delivering sandwiches and drinks for hella cheap.
I would go back in a heartbeat next year to FFG for the next world championship next year and I think the Aussies have the furthest to travel! 20+ hours of flying. 10/10 would do again. Was a fantastic week. Thanks FFG
Is there a list of top finishers from each country?
An Aussie made top 8
Don't forget that in last year's worlds, 2 of the Top 4 were from outside the US - UK National Champ Keith Wilson who lost in the semi-final to Australia's National Champ Morgan Reid, the eventual runner-up.

FFG Event ctr could really use some a/v upgrades. Having 300 people playing where's Waldo with 10 8×11 sheets of paper taped together was pretty lame. Video screens with pairings would have eased the round transitions or a Web app could put the pairings right in everyone's hands. Also video coverage of the feature tables inside the venue would have been cool. This is all technology that is readily available and used on a regular basis in large tournaments

That's why I've suggested Spiel at Essen. FFG/Asmodee are there with some huge booths anyway and there's a hall that this year they'd kept reserved for days to play Catan with a 1000 people on saturday. And even then only half the center is being used.

Asmodee do not have all the distribution rights for FFG games. And the distributors are still in charge of OP. Much like with LFL, just because FFG was bought, does not mean the old contracts are invalidated.

Seems to me it should be an easy thing to fix, you're not supplanting any national OP after all.

the only problem with essen: 2 days are -NOW- not enough, and that is without an xwing-tournament. 4 days of essen and all the noise there? I'd be both happy as a child AND bordering on a killing frenzy (no, noone has to call the police, honest).
IMO you can't have the ususal show and a tournament. I really don't know which one of the two I'd rather have so.. maybe it's good that it's -not- in Essen ![]()
You know, like the World Series is the culmination of the MLB season with their 29 U.S. teams and 1 Canadian one. And also the NBA.
World champs woo!!
To be fair, those leagues are considered to be the top league for their respective sports in the world. Players will leave the Japanese professional baseball league to play in the MLB, as an example.
4 of the 8 people I played at Worlds were from outside the US (Australia, Iceland, Canada, and Poland). Also had a German national join us for AGoT the board game. I guess I was just lucky to get to meet so many from outside my own country.

I know what my wallet would want: the tournament.
