Talonbane Cobra Range Combat Bonus

By frbfli, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Talonbane's pilot ability reads "When attacking or defending, double the effect of your range combat bonuses." I understand that this means when you're being shot at from Range 3 you're getting your Evade Dice bonus, which becomes two Evade Dice. However, if the attack is obstructed do you factor that bonus in to the equation as well?

Let's say Talonbane is protected by an asteroid and the range 3 band. He would get two extra evade dice during the attack. Doubling the value means he would roll four extra evade dice, right?

Range Combat Bonus is strictly range it does not include obstructions.

Thanks! Now his pilot ability seems a lot more balanced.

The trick here is to understand how Defense dice are acquired:

  1. The number of defense dice is equal to your Agility
  2. At Range 3, add one additional defense die (This is where Cobra Commander's ability triggers - becoming two dice)
  3. If the attack is obstructed, add one additional defense die
  4. Roll all dice at the same time

i'm sure there's something forbidding this, but could one not argue that fearlessness ept is a range bonus (must be in range 1 to activate)?

I'm guessing it's because fearlessness adds a hit result and not an extra dice? Though if so i'd counter argue that Cobra's ability mentions bonuses, not dice (and both are ''when attacking'', not ''after rolling, add'')

Fearlessness is not a "range bonus" it's an ability with a specific effect and a range restriction for when it can be activated.

The Rules Reference has an entry for "Range Combat Bonus" which kicks in whenever a primary weapon attack is resolved that tells the attacker or defender to roll an additional die. I'm pretty sure that's the only place in the rules the word Bonus is even used but even if I'm wrong about that it's still pretty clear that his ability only refers to the "Range Combat Bonus".

It does. Thats why zertik stroms pilot ability trumps talonbane cobras, but not mauler mithels or fenn rau's, because they add a seperate range 1 extra die to the normal range combat bonus (which is why fenns rule works on advanced proton torpedoes), whilst talonbane doubles the existing bonus, which strom can remove.

On the other hand, if a future elite, modification or illicit upgrade were to increase one or the other ranged combat bonus, cobra would double that, too.
