I need some ideas please! Obligation: Dutybound

By Genital Grievous, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm starting my new character this Friday evening. In short, he's a Corellian pilot and tinkerer. He's using the Ace Career and is starting with the Pilot and Rigger Specializations.

I rolled for my Obligation and got Dutybound. To sum up, so no one reading this needs to go searching, characters with Dutybound have a deep sense of duty that they are legally or ritualistically bound to uphold such as military service, a contract, or an organization's code. Living up to the duty is difficult and can be detrimental if he fails.

It's cool, and I don't want a reroll or to choose something else, but I'm having a tough time coming up with something interesting to fit.

I sure would like to hear some of your ideas!

Do you know what time-period you are in? Has the Alderaan been destroyed? What about the death star (and which one)?

My immediate idea was this:

He ran away from the Rebellion before he fronted for the Court-martialling he had been sent. It was due to some sort of cowardice or shameful act. The act possibly resulted in the loss of a key base or space station (not life, but something the party could be involved in re capturing). So the character feels a deep debt to the Rebellion, or perhaps the squadron or crew of the ship he was in.

Go emulate Corran Horn. Be an ex-member of Corellian Security (CorSec), and thus still feeling an obligation to be technically law-abider, or at least having some behavioral restrictions based on that background.

You can then even ask your Gm to eventually get Investigation-related skills, as an ex Space Cop.

kaosoe, our campaign takes place just after The Battle of Yavin. So, Alderaan and the first Deathstar are away!

I like SolkaTruesilver's idea. Have you considered the Sector Rangers? There's an unlimited plethera of hooks to draw from, there.

Malcolm Reynolds on Firefly is a good example of Dutybound.

Oh, Sector Rangers! Yeah, I like those guys. Good call, kaosoe!

I think to avoid turning the campaign into "Sector Ranger Me, and My Four Deputies," though, I will say my dude was kicked out of the Rangers. A crimelord he's been hot on ended up framing him for some crime. Now my dude is on his own mission to restore his good name. Meanwhile, he still follows the code because he believes that the means are just as important as the ends; you gotta be a good guy to get the bad guy. When you sink to their level and you fight fire with fire, it's just a bunch of fire.

Thanks, guys!
