Hero and Monster Collection: Just characters or are there classes inside?

By Dommus, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I have atm 22 characters that matches exactly with the number of classes, but I didnt buy any of the Hero&Monster collections. Furthermore, I've noticed that the H&M collections also add to the game more characters, like Astarra, Andira Runehand, Brother Gherinn, and the list goes big.

I have two questions: 1st of all, the H&M collections just enable more characters or they also add new classes?

That brings me to the second question: For instance, characters like Grisban are well known to be a Berserker, and Avric a Disciple, is that right to make someone use Orkell the Swift to be a Marshall? Or even Jain Fairwood a Thief? Or only the H&M characters can be alocated to the existing classes?

In my campaigns I do not allow combos where characters pick any classes they want to maximize their performance, I think this can unbalance the game.

Am I right or the game mechanics were created to live with that?

H&M collections do not add any new classes to the game, only new heroes.

Also you should not be tying specific heroes to specific classes. Its alright if you want to house rule that heroes cannot plan out their full composition to discourage min-maxing, but forcing them to play "Grisban the Berserker" seems overly restrictive.

There are no new classes, though there are about two quests in each and sometimes new rumor or overlord cards.

The heroes are supposed to be able to select any class within their character's archetype. Jain, for instance, has to take a scout class, but she is not limited to the Wildlander.

You can use the Descent Wiki to see what each pack contains.

Hi,

i would not recommend you to restrict the heros to only one class. It takes a lot from the game.

Hi,

if you are restricting the classes because of narrative and story telling reasons, then look at the classes in a different way.

Try to figure out, what a class card could possibly do, and don`t be afraid of using differnt stories for the same class card.

For example: if Ulma grimstone uses the apothecaries healing potions, those healing potions are made from her alchemical wisdom and talent. She mixed them at home and fond them by experimenting.

If you play Ispher as an apothecary the healing potions might be dragons blood with healing powers he extracted from his own veins.

Or if Valadir the marshal uses the smashing blow, he might cast some kind of paladins aura that dammages nearby enemies. But Grisbane the Marshal uses sheer strengh to hit the ground that hard to dammage nearby enemies. (though, i would not recommend playing Grisbane as a marshal: wisdom is to low). :-)

Sorry, if i messed with some class/classcard names. I have the german edition.

In the end, play in that way, that brings you the most fun.

Greetings

H

I would not restrict heroes on hero/class combos outside of the game rules.
