Crit explain please

By WillemTCG, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Is crit given to a ship that still has shield or does it only apply to hull damage.

So like if i roll 2 hit 1 crit against a ship with 3 shield (not taking any green defense tokens into this).

Would the crit be resolved ? as in take damage card faceup.

Or would it simply take the 3 shield damage and go to 0 shield, without resolving any damage card ?

If you roll at least one "CRIT" symbol, you may activate a Critical Effect.

The Standard critical effect is " IF you are dealt a damage card, then draw the first one Face Up."

Since no damage card is drawn in this instance, because the damage was on shields , then Although you can activate it, it has no effect .

However , you could use it to activate another critical effect that an upgrade card gives you - such as Overloard Pulse on a Blue "CRIT"...

For comparison, the Assault Proton Torpedoes upgrade card lets you use your critical effect to give the ship a faceup damage card even if no damage got through the shields .

So in your example, the target ship would lose all 3 shields and be dealt a faceup damage card. And, importantly, not in that order: first you would resolve the critical effect ("take a faceup damage card", which is not the same as the standard "if you are dealt any damage cards in the assign damage step, the first one will be faceup"), and only then assign damage. If the effect of the faceup card is to disable the shields on the target zone (e.g. Projector Misaligned), then the 3 remaining damage from the attack go straight to the hull.

Reading the rules carefully should give you a clear picture of the various steps in resolving the attack; resolution order is extremely important.

By the way Willem, are you based in the Netherlands by any chance?

This?

Oke great thanks guy's think i got it now ;)

@DiabloAzul Yes i'm from the Netherlands

Where? I'm in Den Haag and having difficulty to find opponents :D

Before I start my text I want to appologize for posting an off-topic text.

I am from the Netherlands too. On Facebook there is an Armada group for the Netherlands where you can find opponents.

I am one of the organizers of LOTR Utrecht (www.lotrutrecht.net) where we host miniatures wargames events every month. Since we recently started with Armada we have included it in the casual gaming part (non-tournaments events) which has most players at the first saturday of the month. The third saturday of december we will be hosting our first armada tournament (more info on that will be released soon).

In Den Haag is a store that often has players and events for Armada as well, Tabletop Kingdom.

28th of November there will be a 300 point tournament in Leiden (Tafelridder). More info on that on FB.

I hope to see you soon. :D

Yeah, I'm on the FB group, been to TK a couple of times, too :)

Leiden and Utrecht are a little far to travel during the week (rush hour sucks ), and it's rare that I can play in the weekend. But I'll try.

Thank you for the video, played my first game last night and got confused by it. I also play X Wing, got the rules mixed up. Just want to make sure I got it.

IF the crit effect is from a damage card, then the damage card has to be dealt. So if my CR 90 roles one crit and rest blanks against a VSD with full shields, than the VSD will lose a shield and that's it.

IF the crit effect is from an upgrade (ACM, Ion Cannons, etc...) than as long as the die stays in play (not canceled at long range from an evade), the crit effect happens even if damage does not get dealt.

If you are taking the standard critical effect it only occurs if a damage card is dealt. If you have an upgrade it only matters that you have a crit face showing on the appropriately colored die. So you seem to have it. :)

Remember you may only deal one critical effect per attack.

Remember save us all a lot of trouble and don't bring rules baggage from X-wing to Armada. :D

But just to confirm in Willem's example his shields would be taken from 3 to 0?

Correct. In ship-to-ship combat, criticals count as 1 damage dealt, barring external effects.
