Shield projector vs torpedoes

By killerbeardhawk, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Simple question here and it's because I can't seem to find the order of shooting phases anymore. I love biggs in epic. I'll put 5 to 6 bwings around him, very hard to deal with when that rolls up to your huge ship. I've now been trying to add a transport into the mix so I can use shield projector to protect biggs from those nasty long range shots. I am wondering that if an opponent target locks biggs and wants to shoot a torpedoe at him can I use shield projector? I understand how biggs works you have to shoot what ever you can at him. Does shield projector work the same way or is if possible mean just if the weapon can be fired at the transport?

It's worded in the same way to Biggs, so it would work the same.

If an attacker declares an attack at Biggs with a Torp, and they could target a Huge ship equipped with SP instead, then they must forego the attack on Biggs and make a primary attack on the Huge ship

Its not worded the same.

Biggs: Other friendly ships at Range 1 cannot be targeted by attacks if the attacker could target you instead.

Shield projector: when an enemy ship is declaring either a small or large ship as the target of its attack, you may spend 3 energy to force that ship to target you if possible.

There is also a clarification in the huge ship rules that Biggs' ability does not protect huge ships. An enemy can shoot at a huge ship that is near Biggs with no conflict, so if something is forcing the attacker to target the huge ship, Biggs does not trigger.

I'm trying to protect biggs with the transport, not use biggs to protect my transport.

Just trying to find out if you declare your weapon when you declare your target.

The rules reference gives the process for declaring target: "The attacker may measure range to any number of enemy ships and check which enemy ships are inside his firing arc. Then the attacker chooses one of his weapons to attack with. Then he chooses one enemy ship to be the target and pays any cost required for the attack." So:

1. Measure

2. Choose weapon

3. Choose target

4. Pay costs

It also gives this bullet point: "If there is no valid target for the chosen weapon, or if the attacker cannot pay any costs required for the attack, the attacker may choose a different weapon and target."

Shield Projector is triggered during step 3, after the opponent has already chosen to use their torpedoes. The transport isn't a valid target at that point, since the attacker can't pay the costs to fire torpedoes at it. The question is whether this nullifies Shield Projector's effect because of the "if possible" clause, or if the attacker is considered to have "no valid target" and forced to choose a weapon that can target the transport.

Personally, I'd say that torpedoes get around Shield Projector's protection, because of that "if possible" wording; but if it weren't for the FFG rulings, I'd interpret Biggs' ability the same way. It might be worth sending this question in to FFG to get an official answer.
