Broken ship models

By Riptide, in X-Wing

We all remember it... Picking up our first X-wing core set, feeling the weight of the ships and thinking to ourselves "Oh man these things are fragile! I'm going to 'ease' them onto the base and nudge them gently around the table". I still hold my TIEs in my hands as if they are going to turn to dust just looking at them. But as I play more and more, and realize my 'stack them all in a plastic bin' storage method and jostle them from game to game or the 'flick them when they die horribly' dramatic commander emote is not causing any damage to them, I started thinking about the engineering behind these small game pieces. They have little weight, which in my mind instinctively makes me view them as fragile. Yet this could merely be a result of great design, offering strength and light weight models. After reading a lot of forums, I have rarely seen a complaint about a broken ship. I was just curious if this is the norm for these durable beasts, or if people have run into wear and tear on their pieces from time to time.

I've only ever had a wing pop off one of my TIE Interceptors and that was from a small fall. It popped right back in to place no problem.

My first TIE Advanced needed the wing glued back on and now the same thing just happened to my TIE Punnisher. 2 in 50+ is not a bad record and Gorilla Glue has fixed both of them.

they're sturdy models

except

the little nub thing that connects the ship to its pegs

**** that thing

lost four ships across x-wing and Armada to that nonsense; still have to fix them

So far so good I have had one of my b-wing cannon tips break off. Not bad considering

I had an opponent struck a cannon off a B-wing with a ruler (by accident) - which ended with a gun-mod instead of (with a couple of old WH40K guns). And my son knocked a Punisher to the floor and the wing broke off - which was easily glued on again.

Stupid B-wing cannons. Had one of those break the first week I owned the game. Nothing else since. Granted the B-wing fell off the table...

I broke a wing of an advanced, glued right back on can't even tell which one it was now.

Given it's a game for adults i suppose they think we can pick things up and not crush them.

I was at a friend's house playing X-Wing in his basement. He went to go pull a sheet of cardboard out of ceiling vent directly above the center of the map, and the whole vent fell down and broke 3-4 Interceptors.

They were all clean breaks though, glued back together good as new. It was kind of funny, lol.

I have a B-Wing with a cannon that's wiggly and about to break. I've dropped a TIE Fighter to have the female end of the peg that is in the ship break off inside of it and had to pay a friend to dremel it out.

I've also had 2 of my 4 K-Wings have their female peg ends break off. I store them semi-loose in a Plano 3700 compartment together, but there is really no weight on them at all so I have no clue why that happened.

And 1 Starviper and a Defender with female peg ends that came loose and fell out.

I had a Wave 1 Tie Advanced with a wing panel pop off. Easy glue fix, though.

I was moving my Plano case of ships around before a game and brought mine down kind of hard right on the tip of my Xizor Starviper. It broke one wing lose. It got slowly worse through time and finally fell off. I eventually clipped them all and/or bent them back to go with a folded wing look. It looks nice! I didn't fold them back all the way, though. I kind of like it that way.

Something stupid happened to one of my Tie Bombers and the place where the peg plugs in fell off. I forget what I did, but I glued it back on. I just had to re-glue it again as it came loose after a year. Right before the end, it was coming loose and the whole ship was turned on it's base. A couple of opponents laughed and said they kept looking at where the ship was pointing and not the base. It was throwing them off.

I still laugh when I think of the "Derpfender"!

My wife had a huge fit and landed full onto to my collection the other week, I was expecting a pile of broken plastic once I had made sure she had recovered ok.
Went to sort through the wreckage of a trashed chair and table that they were on only to find all my ships intact, sturdy is an understatement!

I am also surprised at the people who prefer foam cases who say that they are worried more than their ships would break in a Plano case. I've not had anything ever break in mine. I like leaving them on the pegs in the case for easy in and out.

Lost a cannon on my lambda. But that was my fault. Also dropped an FO and had the base connector come off

My other half is quite clumsy but all she has managed is the base connector and a gun off of her B-wing.

Had a Lamda pop out its clear peg and an adv pop off a wing and those K turrets are super fragile, but other than that all good.

I'd be worried more about scratching my paintjobs. The plastic insterts from the blisters still work for me, but they do of course take away space.

2 of my b wings have had their guns broken off.

I ran over the derpfender in my car but it still gets play time - the glue job has mostly come undone, it's like 1/3 of a mangled ship now but it still wins matches.

My yt-2400's top cannons came off - so I glued them to an a wing, in an attempt to ay least symbolically increase the latter's firepower.

My firespray canons have broken off.

The clear plastic receptacle has broken off the bottom of another a wing.

My interceptor wing popped off once but I simply popped it back in

My rebel transport had its cockpit portion broken off. I glued it back.

I'm starting to feel like I'm rougher on my things than other players.

TIE Advanced wing popped off in the Plano once but I think it was due more to tumultuous jostling than the case itself. Everything else has been fine.

tumultuous jostling

Nice.

Bwing cannons are the worst.

DERPFENDER!!!

I am surprised at the durability of the ships- dropped a few from table to floor and they've always just bounced. I'm still paranoid though and keep them all in the blisters which is extremely space hungry.

The first time I took the X Wing out if the box though, ****, those spindly cannons, I was so worried. Still not had one break.

I treat my miniatures very delicately, but I dropped my TIE Punisher from table-height and a wing snapped cleanly off. Was able to super glue it back without any issue though.

I also noticed one of my TIE Fighter's wings was starting to wiggle a bit, so I added some glue pre-emptively.

Friend accidently kicked my TIE fighter across the floor after we had the game less then a week. Both wings were broken but the glue worked well and only one is a bit off.

My brother-in-law and I both had the female peg end break off. Can anyone recommend good glue to fix it? Krazy Glue sucks.
