Journey to The Force Awakens...

By bkirchhoff, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Anyone else "tucking" content into their adventures that tie into TFA?

If you are looking for away to do so, there are several books that are part of the "Journey to The Force Awakens" that have some great content lends itself to that task rather well.

I whole heartedly recommend Greg Rucka's "Smuggler's Run" as a great starting point. It's really intended as Young Adult Fiction, but frankly is one of the best Star Wars novels I've ever read (and it includes a minor character from TFA that my PCs are working for in their current campaign. My players have no idea that this connection exists... looking forward to their reactions in December.

Anyone else?

That sounds like an awesome connection to make in the cinema :D

Would have loved to do something like that with my group, but since I won't be playing with them again until after xmas it's not going to happen.

Let us know how they reacted when it's out! :D

Thanks for the suggestion. I am looking at seeding the campaign starting in a couple weeks to start pointing in that direction to tie the game to ep VI and VII. I will have to look into that novel!

I do!!!

I was planning to use Aftermath's Emperor's Cultist as the catalyst. Specifically:

“Palpatine felt that the universe beyond the edges of our maps was where his power came from. Over the many years he, with our aid, sent men and women beyond known space. They built labs and communication stations on distant moons, asteroids, out there in the wilds. We must follow them. Retreat from the galaxy. Go out beyond the veil of stars. We must seek the source of the dark side like a man looking for a wellspring of water.”

I am planning to use this as the foundation of my campaing. The characters being the survivors of one of these expeditions.

This is a really freaking cool idea.

Thanks!

So many possibilities... It will be fun.

Most of my games take place too early to really take advantage of this. I did however, have a Jedi go to Jakku under the (false?) impression that it was an easier place to acquire a Krayt Dragon Pearl than Tattooine.

I read Star Wars: Lost Stars and although it happens during the Rebellion Era it does end at the Battle of Jakku (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Jakku) and does shed some light into what the Empire wanted with Lothal (a brief reference to Kyber cryslals to the first Deathstar). It also explains the crashed Star Destroyer.

I don't know if Aftermath had much to go on, I couldn't get past the first 50 or so pages before my brain threatened it's own rebellion. (Sorry but it's so poorly written I just had to put it down).

I loved Aftermath. I can't wait for the next book in the trilogy. It read like an RPG campaign to me. I could see my group taking up the roles of the main characters in the book. I really liked the little interludes, too, that gave glimpses into the rest of the galaxy's state after Endor.

Maybe it's because I went in expecting crap, having heard nothing but how bad it was. But, I was pleasantly surprised with it, and I really enjoyed it.

I thought Lost Stars was good, but it dragged until the cadets left the Academy. That's when the story picked up, and I got really invested.

The real surprise, though, was the young reader books. Who knew that the Falcon had SLAM drives?

Tried to read "Aftermath"... didn't get very far. Maybe 50 pages or so. The writing - not good - bad maybe even. Very short sentences. Lots of hyphens too. May-be too many.

Then I gave Smuggler's Run a go. I got the audio book from Audible which was probably a mistake. Instead of a traditional reading, it has all sort of sound effects combined with an overly dramatic and, umm, "enthusiastic" rendition by the reader. It's obviously aimed at kids and it became very annoying after two hours, so I didn't finish that one either. I think it would have worked better has I got the Kindle version instead.

Now I'm listening to "How Star Wars Conquered the Universe: The Past, Present, and Future of a Multibillion Dollar Franchise" by Chris Taylor which is absolutely fantastic. Can't recommended it enough for anyone interested in Star Wars as the cultural phenomenon it is.

I definitely Recommend Lost Stars as it was really good and one of my favorites of the new canon books. It does a great job of bringing showing why there are "Good" people who joined the empire. Also gives an interesting view of Social behavior in the Imperial Military. For those who want to use in a Campaign. It can be used as a strong reference material.

I finished The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure - It does a great job of explaining how Luke advances his Lightsaber skills. The method can definitely be incorporated into a campaign.

As for Aftermath - A book I was very excited for and I did enjoy, but was not all I wanted it to be. The book does jump back and forth and it seems to be attempting to setup the next book as much as telling the main story. It does have a lot of good ideas that can be incorporated into campaigns.
