Pros and Cons of the Rebel large ships?

By FlightyBombJack, in X-Wing

I've been looking at the larger rebel ships, the YT series freighters. I can see a lot of good stuff for each of them... both good models, both have nice pilots and cards, etc. I am kind of wondering what freighter you guys lean towards and why? I have only really seen Han and Chewy in play at the local game store, never a Dash. I have seen videos of super Dash and he is kinda nuts, but I haven't seen him in play at the store.

Kinda looking for some experienced players giving some comparisons between the two craft though.

I might grab one down the road, way down the road. I have had some experience with larger ships, I have a shuttle and firespray, and I have played with a decimator a couple times and I love the thing. I just do not dabble with the Rebels much, but I have been eyeing them lately is all.

The freighter i lean towards is no freighter.

But for real, either one is good. 1300 is more durable with its 2 crew slots, but the 2400 is more agile and offensive. the 2400 can arc dodge pretty well, and it's got a cannon slot. I would prefer the 2400, but if you prefer more durability and crew options, the 1300 is for you.

I prefer the 2400. It's more interesting to play with the cannon slot and barrel roll.

Definitely the 2400.

Han/chewys only real talent is surviving. Yeah it works but it's not much fun to play.

Dash owns the board like an arc dodging ace (almost)

He has much more reason and ability to take the fight to the enemy, which is why he's a lot of fun to play. He gets the best of both worlds

I even heard you can take other pilots with the 2400 lol

Large ship barrel roll, 'nuff said...

Con: They ain't no Ghost.

Both I say. I like both of them, and you can put them both on the table at the same time if you're interested in that.

2400 by far

The primary weapon turret is the single most boring, lazy, and uninvolved garbage heap of a game mechanic

The ships that can perform without it (kwing tlt + bombs, yt2400 cannon with possible title; int agent shenanigans on both) are redeemable. The yt1300 is just a snorefest for all players involved

Dash is amazing, but not many use him because he is very skill intensive. Although he ignores arc and obstacles, that range 1 limitation really makes you think hard and ahead due to the consequence of getting absolutely boned by bad positioning.

You can mangler to ignore the doughnuthole, but then you're just screwing yourself over against high agility. The extra die from HLC is essential to beat IGs, soontir, phantoms etc as well as the less nuanced fat turrets (which will otherwise win the unavoidable dice fest)

... The yt1300 is just a snorefest for all players involved...

Man, I'm tired of that rhetoric. FGD, I like you, but you gotta stop injecting this opinion into everything. Guy hasn't even flown it and you're already telling him it's boring. I don't think that a YT1300 is a boring snorefest (either to play with or against), though I get that some people do. Maybe let a new guy learn this for himself?

Still it might be worth to point out that the Falcon has a boring 3(!)dice primary weapon turret, and a hilariously good dial on a large base, esp if you put engine upgrade on top, it gets stupidly fast. That is one aspect I myself do not like in X-wing, that the **** rebel freighters fly so much better than many fighters.

I prefer the YT-2400, although the second crew slot of the YT-1300 is always tempting. A lot of it comes down to your preferred play style - the YT-1300 generally favours a more defensive style of play, while the YT-2400 really wants to take the fight to the enemy.

It's fair that 3 dice primary weapon turret is strong. But the Decimator has the same, and the Outrider can have it easily with the Mangler or more with the HLC.

I'd say that the YT-1300 dial is fair. There's not a tonne of green on there, and the lack of the 3 hard turns makes things tough at times. For example, the YT-2400 dial is better. For large base ships, it's hard to get better than the Aggressor to be honest. Every move, plus native boost, and 6 green maneuvers, plus the segnors loop... That's a ship that would be seriously broken with a PWT.

I dunno. I get that some people don't like it, but you have to admit that the Falcon is a strong ship in the movies, and it's the first real example of star fighter combat we get to see, and you pay an awful lot to take the ship properly kitted (often 62 or 64 points) with Han as your pilot. I'm just saying, it's not unbalanced I don't think, and it can be very fun to fly with and against. Some people find the Han vs Fel battle boring, but I find it really challenging. I had to deal with it at Worlds the other day and I enjoyed it.

The problem I have with the way the Falcon works is how frustrating the "You shoot me? I shoot you." thing is. It really stresses your green dice, while you might not even get a shot. This is no comment on balance, I sometimes like to play against PWTs, but rather on game design faults from the earlier times of this game. Good that lessons have been learned an the Outrider has a doughnut hole, the Decimator can be kitted out for RAMMING SPEED (too bad no one does that, pretty nice playstyle) and the Jumpmaster 5000 can't be spammed with 3 dice and strongly encourages keeping your arc on the enemy.
