who's got deathrains back ;)

By TheOz, in X-Wing

So got my punisher finally and I want to fly it and have some fun with it, but I have yet to see what kind of squad to fly him in

I'm running him with extra munitions, Conor net, prox mine, accuracy corrector (auto thrusters/twin ion engine, kinda not sure about those)

Any idea of who to fly with this bomber on roids ;)

nope!

actually the hardest part about Deathrain is finding the right mix of punch and protection to run him with  I mean, you can run mini-swarm and it can punch well, but Tie Fighters are notoriously inept at dealing with naked green dice (except with Crackshot involved...best upgrade)

contrary to Redline, who is a flying tank at the best of times, Deathrain probably does not need thrusters due to the combination of control and shenanigans he can pull off with front bombs + conners. The best defense for him/her is simply no getting shot.

So, I guess it's Tiemk2 by default, if any, or Experimental Interface if you're crazy cool (post-boost mines!)

for the squad itself I honestly have no idea, but I'll be trying out the exact same Deathrain + two chadwick bombers (homing missiles + seismics + extra munitions) + academy pilot

hoping that homing missiles and seismics can benefit from the combination of control and token denial that conners provide

Major Rhymer (35)

Adv. Homing Missiles (3), Extra Munitions (2), Engine Upgrade (4)

"Deathrain" (37)

Extra Munitions (2), Concussion Missiles (4), Proton Bombs (5)

Omnicron Group Pilot (28)

Darth Vader (3), Engine Upgrade (4)

I appreciate the advice so far, maybe 4 tie, maybe 3 advanced, I guess I just gotta see how good he is to see if he can run without another ace. Rhymes crossed my mind but I don't feel so good with him, he is too expensive when built up, to where I would rather run another ace or a couple generic bombers

Not any of wave 7 that's for sure. Yes Deathrain is the best pilot for torpedoes but that is like saying Major Rhymer is the best pilot for Adv homing missiles, and Keyan Farlander is the best pilot for Adv Proton Torpedoes. Despite those being the only pilots that can use those weapons effectively, you still don't see AHM or APT because it is still too much (squadron points) for too little. :(

Bottom line is torpedoes and missiles still suck, and the best thing to come out of Wave 7 was a turret, the twin laser turret. <_<

This was my off the wall spur of the moment "Bomber" List, threw it together and worked well enough.

Deathrain was able to drop a Custer Mine and my opponents ship flew right through all 3 of them, then also dropped a proximity mine forward and was able to dodge it with the free barrel roll. The list was a lot of fun. I sent the 3 Scimitars in to the fray and Deathrain followed in close behind and broke everything up.

Huh? Deathrain isn't a torpedo carrier; he's a dedicated bomber. Are you getting him confused with Redline?

TLTs are the easy button, munitions take effort to use properly.

And Deathrain doesn't care about torpedoes, he's the Mad Bomber What Bombs At Midnight, baby!

I like 37 pt deathrain with ex munis + Prox x2+ choice of Adv Sens or AC.

Experimental Interface is fun but I don't think it adds a ton of competitive plays unless you really just happen to have 3pts laying around.

Connor nets are a point more and worth their weight in gold if you end up facing ACES but Aweful Vs. Swarm or low PS spam.

He's great at 37pts with AC Tempests x3 or x2 with a ZAce + PTL.

He is also confusing the food chain. Redline RUINS TLTS. I have yet to see a ywing get lucky enough to survive his plasma and 4 black squadron crackshots

Too vulnerable to use with rain, though

In other news, got the last aggressor to half. Would have won but then green dice had to invalidate 3 homing missiles

Green dice without mods

I kind of like:

BLACK RAIN

PILOTS

“Deathrain” (40)

TIE Punisher (26), Advanced Sensors (3), Extra Munitions (2), Proton Bombs (5), Conner Net (4)

Darth Vader (36)

TIE Advanced (29), TIE/x1 (0), Lone Wolf (2), Engine Upgrade (4), Advanced Targeting Computer (5)

Tempest Squadron Pilot (21)

TIE Advanced (21), TIE/x1 (0), Accuracy Corrector (3)

Your last 3 points can be Autothrusters for the big guy or prockets (and possibly a downgrade to VI) for Vader, whatever you fancy. Either of your expensive ships should be able to make your opponent pay for focusing on the other.

Deathrain is love :D

Say you have enemy in front. Choose green maneuver. Adv Sensors -> Boost, EI->drop Mines, free BR out of arc, get stress, perform move, remove stress.

It is just so fun to fly.

Advanceds work pretty well since their dials are so similar.

Yeah I was interested in the 3 tempest as support, I just was not sure if they are better then 4-5 ties.

I had fun with this:

I especially liked the ion bombs because I could drop them without worrying too much about friendly fire, and roll Deathtrain on out of the way of something.

Deathrain is love :D

but definitely not life :P

Ion Bombs and Connor Nets have a great synergy too - you can Connor Net them one round, then Ion Bomb them the next - they'll have moved and removed the ion tokens before they get re-bombed... and re-ioned.. :)

I was just looking at possible tricks with Deathrain, and if he reveals a 4K, drops a bomb forward (Seismic or Proton), barrel rolls, and then executes the 4K, he clears the range 1 radius of the bomb. With Advanced Sensors, he can even boost before doing all of that for better positioning of the bomb.

That makes the drop-on-reveal bombs much more attractive for him, since I had been assuming he'd either have to drop them behind or use something like a 3 hard turn to get away, which would take him out of the fight for a while.

I haven't come up with anything better to run him with than TIE fighters, though, either 5 Academies or 4 Black Squadron with Crack Shot.

I really like him with advanced sensors. I struggle with the fact that after 4 rounds of dedicated bombing (or with redline, rocketing) AC or FCS is better. But I also tend to forget that if after you have blown up that much stuff you either have the game in the bag or you're hosed because it's your really expensive tie bomber vs. too many opposing ships.
