Nexus of Power

By Blackbird888, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

It may be that branding is just one example (taken from a Jedi textbook a thousand years old) of many challenges. Any sort of trial that tests one on a physical level would work, even just one to avoid temptation for GMs looking to play with Emotional Strengths and Weaknesses.

  • Trial of the Flesh - Determines a Jedi's capacity to overcome great pain; historically inflicted either through ritual branding and the like, or through suffering a great injury on the field of battle, as with Anakin on Geonosis.

Is it just me, or does that really not seem very Jedi-like? You'd think that would come up at some point, Jedi getting branded. In my mind, the Trial of the Flesh could also be represented by some physical temptation to abandon the ways of the Jedi.

Also, New!Canon says the trials follow these steps: teamwork, isolation, fear, anger, betrayal, focus, instinct, forgiveness, protection. I doubt they have to be completed in that order.

I believe some races, like Mirialan, do ritual branding/tattoos, so maybe that could apply to that trial?

Part of me thinks that's kind of cool, if it's done in a ritualistic way. I'm sure if my Mechanic gal found out Jedi branding, she'd go run off and get it done. :P

As a ritual conclusion sure. "You have passed your trials, now let the fires of creation kiss your flesh, and mark you as one of our Order, forever a reminder of your victories, and your duty to the Light." Sure, THAT kind of branding I'm all for. But as the trial itself? That sounds more like a torture session, with a more sinister bent. I mean yeah, you could argue that "sending them out into the harsh environment" is torture too, but it's a pretty typical trope of mystical training. I mean just look at the Guardian source book, showing that Jedi meditating under what is most likely a really cold waterfall, while maintaining his focus. That's a lot different to me, compared to "Hold him down while I stick him with this hot poker!"

Got my call from my FLGS, and it's in. Hopefully can pick it up, provided the weather doesn't prevent me.

Are there any new force powers in this book?

No, unfortunately not.

Has anyone received a shipping notice from MiniatureMarket?

Received my shipping notice this evening from MM :)

The Jedi Trials are detailed on about 1 and a half pages at the end of chapter 2 (pg 94-95)

Thanks! I haven't received a notice yet. But their website says it has been shipped.

I imagine it to be something like a survival test in the wilds.

What do you guys think of the content in this book?

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed overall.

What I didn't like:

It is by far the least transferable to other systems. The information inside is quite a bit pulled from Clone Wars and Rebels, which is nice to have in one place, but doesn't actually give me anything new. The other stuff is a fantasy planet.... Which is of questionable use. The gear is situational or only applicable to the weird fantasy planet. The maps are also useless.

What I did like:

The species. The overall production quality is very good and the writing is also solid.

I don't want to hate on it, but I was hoping for something different I guess.

Got it today! Really great book, with lots of info. Even mentions Tython!

Even mentions Tython!

Do go on...

Weather was bad most of today, so I'll have to pick it up on the 'morrow.

Even mentions Tython!

Do go on...

Tython is in the Vergensces section. Talks about the origins of the Jedi and how they come from Tython. Though the perspective is told from a holocron. Talks about locations like Tythos ridge, temple of knowledge, Vur Tepe: The Forge, Silent Desert. Seems to be from the novels.

I have to say I am a little disappointed in the items sections. I think Keeping the Peace items are a little better.

When you say other systems, do mean things like WEG's D6 or WotC's d20 or are you meaning the other titles in this system, namely Edge and Age?

Yeah, sorry, Edge and Age.

For Age, some of those 'lost' planets can easily show up when looking for a location to build a Rebel base. For Edge, they can serve much the same function but change Rebel base to an out-of the way smuggler meet or "the X on our treasure map" as appropriate. And regardless of the line, an Astrogation error can always put you somewhere unexpected.

I'd counter that with... The information for those planets is specifically geared for force sensitives, the other information doesn't make them very unique or provide stuff that I haven't seen before. So, there's not really a reason to send other groups to these planets. Also, most have imperial presence and the abandoned temples would make poor bases for the rebels as they are under surveillance, etc. That said, I'm going to use some of the creatures from Ilum for another ice planet I'm making, but that's the most I can glean from it.

TBH, I'm ok with that, I see F&D as the least interactive with the other lines. The heavy emphasis on discovering the past glories of the Jedi separates it from the other settings. I also see it clashing with canon the most easily and have difficulty imagining the end game.

This book, more than anything else in the line, is focused on F&D exclusively. There's next to nothing that's of value for Edge or Age campaigns.

It provides a little better context to portions of the galaxy and the additions it makes to a Galaxy gazetteer are helpful, but non-essential.

If the focus of your campaign is the Force and Jedi, this book is going to be excellent. If not, then it's the first book I'd say is truly optional to add to your library.

Or if you have any Force Sensitives in the group! There are some great items, locations, and modular encounters that Edge/Age characters could enjoy and have fun with. It doesn't have to be just FaD characters that will make use of this book. I can't wait to see what my GM throws at my Mechanic/Niman gal.

I noticed that in the gear section there is no price/rarity listed for the droids. It's possible they intended there not to be, but it's strange it would be in the Player Options chapter.

That's something that should have been noticed in playtest. Oh wait, it was...

What all gear and vehicles are in it?

Never got a shipping notice from MM, but my copy appeared on my doorstep yesterday. Alas, I still haven't had a chance to really dive into it, beyond copying the gear into my ever-growing spreadsheet.

I also never got a shipping notice from MM, but it showed up Saturday.

I like the book quite a bit, but it doesn't add tons for non-force users. There is the four new species (I like the selections) and some new equipment and weapons (no armor). We're in a heavy force campaign at the moment, so I plan to put Nexus to good use, but if you're playing a non-force game and money is an issue then this is a book you can leave off your list.

I've only started to skim through the meat of the book, but what I've read is good. I'm looking forward to really digging in.
