Discussion Time: Building your community

By Lyraeus, in Star Wars: Armada

What did you do to get the prize support?

Basically scoped out a FLGS organiser that i could work a mutual deal with where they boosted the prize support if i got more players attending the event. Kinda like doing the marketing for them.

We ate just getting started in this area. I've followed every Facebook page of every game store I have heard of within an hour drive. I've also got a few outside that 1.5 to 2 hour drive that have active communities. Im trying to get out to stores on xwing nights to offer demos but haven't had the time to really go to more than a couple. I need an accomplice that can visit some and we can divide the territory.

While those comments may or may not be valid assessments, I'm not sure what they contribute to the topic at hand. It seems to me that Lyraeus is attempting to figure out how we can bring more people and enthusiasm to the game. Bellyaching about what FFG should'a/could'a done doesn't seem like it helps people achieve that goal.

True enough, sorry.

My time is rather limited and as much as I just couldn't make a regular commitment. However, I am on the look out for players that would have me once every blue moon. So while I may not be able to grow my own group I may add one more to an existing one.

As such I would propose that you:

  • Make your community as open and as friendly as you can manage
  • Be prepared to join up with another community and increase their group size
  • If you belong to two groups have a teams competition and try and ensure that the two groups can be merged come tournament time.

Sometimes it isn't about playing tournament preparation, build a 600-1000 point list and just blow stuff up. If you are laughing and cheering and having a good time, people will want to find out why.

Just looked at the Nov/Dec calendar for the FLGS I frequent...

X Wing Tournament mid November, Armada being the demo of the week first week of December.

Got a feeling I'm directly responsible for a store ran demo of that game. :D That and the likelihood that Wave 2 could be in stores by then.

Next mission is getting a casual tournament held. I'll have to get out of towners in for that. The local group is one hand countable.

For Sullust we had events in two stores. Both had eight or more players.

We're I'm at, the Thursday night game meet for Armada is usually myself and one other player... But at the store thirty minutes away, there usually is more interest.

Next tourney is the 28th, and we expect attendance to be affected by thanksgiving. We will see.

I really think wave two being held back so long has hurt the game immensely. At least three people I know consider the game unsupported because of this, and decided not to buy into it.

You live out in where the Office was filmed right? If so then you should be even prouder of this accomplishment!

Well, they did have a lot of legitimate props in the show, but I don't think they filmed here more than once or twice. But when the actors come here, they're hailed as local rock stars.

Our next tournament is the 20th and is a Friday. I hope to get decent attendance but I don't know. . . Really worried about it. . .

We've got 6 people listed as 'going', and another 5 as 'maybe's. I think anything over 5 attending is win. (5 is a 'meh' and 4 is a draw).

Surely it can't be as bad as the one I had where we had four and then two people bailed on us mid-tournament. That really sucked.
