Rule change poll up.

By Silver leader, in X-Wing

This is the only solution FFG could have come up with, short of giving away damage decks for the next year, to fairly make the new deck legal. FFG has NEVER required the purchase of anything past the original Core to play compete in premier tournaments for this game. Glad to see they are keeping it that way.

I fixed that for you, because the new deck never meant you couldn't play the game still.

You've always been required to purchase more than the core to compete, though, because how else were you going to get a 100-point squad?

Nevermind. Some smart-alec is going to come along and tell me it's always been perfectly legal to bring a 39-point-squad of Luke, R2-D2, Marksmanship, and Proton Torpedoes for a tournament, and they have a point.

I don't think anyone just buys the core and plays it for any length of time. You either buy a bunch of other ships, or move on and play other games.

This seems like a claim without supporting evidence. Level/frequency of play and investment in the game was not part of the poll.

Look at the people on this forum, they are not your average run of the mill, a game a month with some buddies people.

They are the avid listbuilders, they know the rules inside and out, they not only are aware of a metagame, they help define the worldwide metagame. They are in regular contact with the designers and are basically done playing with a wave before it even hits the boats.

Go poll people in LGS's, you'll get a different result.

But I do follow the game intently and keep up with these forums daily.

I voted in the poll, and I said the new damage deck should be required, because though kids and life keep me busy, I may find a random time where maybe I'll be able to play some more tourneys. If and when I do, I'd like the damage deck rule to not be stupid.

Of course there is, there is likely a large group who really don't care either way, and that group too is affected by the rules change. Why does their opinion not matter to you? Why are you telling them they shouldn't even vote? FFG has to take them into account as well. It's a polling of opinions, you can't then just say that some opinions have no weight.

I don't know. Why is there a "I don't really care either way." option on no voting ballot ever?

You either want one side of the issue to prevail, and you vote for that side, or if you don't care, and then you don't vote for either. Or, if you're weird, or you feel like you just have to make your voice heard, you vote for one side anyway, even though you don't care.

It's not that their opinion doesn't matter to me, it's that they don't HAVE an opinion. They literally don't care which option FFGs chooses. So why do they even want to weigh in if they don't care what happens?

your vote on the new damage deck rule.

Well these are the latest results

Selection Votes

Yes, both decks legal 19% 38

No, new deck only 73% 144

meh, its dumb to keep changing the rule 7% 14

196 total

I voted for the new deck, I play one to 2 times a month at a local game store. Played in 1 store championship and 4 special events last year. My son and myself usually play about 2 to 3 times a month, depending on our work schedules. I enjoy the game on a fun level, played in the store championship just to get a feel for the level of play. I have bought at least 1 of each expansion. I am a miniature gamer, not only x-wing, but also WWII naval minis, micro armor, and some battle tech now and then. so that kind of let you know where I fit in the gaming community.

Because it establishes an overall weighting of the importance of the issue to the population. If there is a "meh" option in a poll of 100,000, you might get results like this:

Yes: 900

No: 100

Meh: 99,000

This tells us that 99% of the populace thinks of it as a non-issue, which is the most important factor by far. .9% believe "yes" and .1% believe "no".

Conversely, if we remove this option, we might receive:

Yes: 900

No: 100

We now believe that 90% of the population believes "yes" and we are off on how important "yes" is to the populace by 2 orders of magnitude.

Of course, this all falls out the window when you have a self-selecting group of respondents (rather than a randomized one), who by all logic would probably ignore such a poll if they didn't care about the issue. But clearly some number of people feel strongly enough "meh" to respond as such, so the option is not useless.

Maybe a lot of users of the forum are here because they don't get a lot of games and don't have regular opponents to chat X-Wing with. I don't know.

How do you know what the result of a poll in my local gaming store would be? I can't say either way before asking and wouldn't want to assume.

What percentage of forum users would you say are in regular contact with the designers? More than half? I'm not, and now I feel left out.

Agreed, it's not a wise idea to assume every local store is going to agree/disagree with an opinion because some might think they fall into a certain category of players. From my experience the local store I go to is highly competitive but I wouldn't assume its the same everywhere else.

I didn't realize that being a part of a forum gave me regular contact with the developers either, so when do I get my VIP card?

Next year's regionals much like worlds will require the new damage deck, and just like worlds will hand out a damage deck to all players at these premier events.

This is, of course, speculation as it is neither in the article nor in the Tournament Rules, only Worlds 2015 is mentioned as far as I can see.

True, but why would they treat next Years regionals any different from this year's worlds? Premier events are supposed to be consistent with only changes being either new releases or FAQs for house keeping such as clarifying card interactions.

I have been playing x-wing for 2 years now and have participated in a grand total of 2 tournaments. I didn't place in the top 4 of either tournament. I have never been to gencon, or any gaming con for that matter. I do not own every copy of every ship to date- and most of the expansions i do have I only own one copy of. I don't own C-3PO because I didn't feel it was worth the investment to buy the CR-90.

And I voted.

And I'm willing to bet that for every VorpalSword or MajorJuggler or JoeBossRed7 or Mu0n here we have 100 forum-goers who play at my level.

Um, thanks? I think.

But I feel like I should point out that I play a lot, and I'm heavily invested in the game, but I'm not exactly a terrifying challenge to other tournament players...

They would be consistent with the rules if they allowed both decks, with this Worlds being different due to the short amount of time between Worlds and the rule change.

Oh by all means, it is meant as a compliment, so do take it as one.

And my point was only that for every "heavily invested" X-winger we have on the forums there are dozens of "moderately invested" wingers here too.
