DWRR's Shipyards - X-Wing Edition

By DWRR, in X-Wing

Hello everyone, I thought I'd start a dedicated thread for my X-Wing repaints. A nice distraction from the Damage Deck discussion filling the airwaves currently...

To kick things off, my rag tag rebel Squadron.

After a test run on my B-Wing I went right ahead and painted the entire squadron for an upcoming escalation tournament.

The sqaudron is supposed to be a these ancient relic ships, flown by pilots that are almost past it, lead by Poe Dameron 30 years after Endor... (Iron Eagle III style...)

Great work! Love the blue-grey-silver theme.

Those A-Wings!

Great work, maybe some close ups of the details?

Crazy detail on the pics on your blog. Wow.

Awesome work, very realistic looking. What paints did you use, I really like the rust brown streaks, is that a wash?

Really love your weathering work and the gem detail you've created for your cockpits!

I wish I could like it more than once. Several likes for the amazing paint jobs, and a bonus like for not being a petition thread.

You've done an incredible job on these. Well done.

These are some of the best repainted I've seen. Fantastic.

These are straight-up, GD beautiful. Excellent work!

Goddamit, this might be my favourite repaint squadron now, a position previously held by the amazing work of Macross. Weathering can often appear overdone imo, but it's balanced so well here with the clean colour scheme, and your brushwork is amazing. Great concept too.

Gratz!

Thanks for the very kind words everyone!

I'll be uploading a quick 'how to' very soon describing some of the techniques and paints used.

Two brushes up! Like the paint scheme love the results. I just came from a IPMS contest and your paint results put some of the models there to shame! Nicely done.

Wow. I simply love the detail in making the models look battle-harden. Great job!

Those are some of the dopest A-wings I have ever seen.

For me, it's your cockpit details that put these repaints over-the-top. They're downright excellent! From the glaze to the light reflections ... exquisite job!

I want to see Macross and DWRR have a 'paint off' ... and then give all the models to me.

Seriously .. Beautiful stuff. I saw your post in Reddit and had to show a friend. She couldn't believe the level of detail obtained on such a small surface.

These look great! The high contrast is what sets them apart for me ;).

Evening fellow Pilots. I had a few spare moments tonight so was able to put up the painting 'how to' for my 'Rag Tag' Rebel Squadron.

As I say at the end of the article, if you have any questions or want further explanation just ask away.

These are both key for a tabletop miniature. A nice high contrast to show off the detail and something to make the model 'pop' like a bright canopy.

Aw shucks, ☺️ thanks.

I honestly think Macross is much more neat and focused painter and well... just plain better than me. The various Scum ships inspired by insects and animals... Stunning!

Also just a quick note to say the feathering technique mentioned in the 'how to' will get it's own tutorial as soon as I get time in a few days.

I used to build model planes when I was a kid but that was many years ago. After seeing these repaints, I am starting to think that I might want to give this a try. Any suggestions on how to get started?

Start simple. Simple colour scheme, simple ship.

Pick up some acrylic colours from a well known hobby brand - P3, Valejo, Games Workshop etc. Get some good brushes and just focus on putting one thinned down basecoat onto the model.

Only once you have been able to neatly paint the whole modem one colour should you move onto blocking in some of the details or painting an ink over the top of your basecoat. Small steps. Keep it simple and always water your paints down.

The best thing you can do is just start. Pick up a few grey paints, a good fine detail brush and a basecoat brush and just give it a try.
