If you can only have one... Which core to start with

By Eyegor, in X-Wing

Me personally, if I had to choose, I'd go with the original, because Classic TIEs > FO TIEs.

But if you aren't me, I'd go with TFA one. Because even though the 2nd Damage Deck isn't a requirement currently, it might be in the future, so you might as well own the right one.

The FOs aren't bad. They don't swarm well as a pure, but two of them fit well into a swarm. The characters are fun.

The old core has things in it which are out-dated now, plus the new kids will be into the new ships more than the old. It is a better set all around, after having time to clean stuff up FFG just made a sexy new set that is just as cool as the old set, and is better for actual game play.

Nostalgia is not relevant to this product... nor to the kids who will buy it.

:)

All new players should go with the new core set because the game from here on out is all Force Awakens. New players will be able to build effective lists with the new ships etc. Buy the old stuff as flavor but the new core set is better for the new players. Also eventually the new damage deck will be required.

Good luck

I feel like saying you'll get more mileage out of the ships in the original Core Set (Academy Pilots, Dark Curse, Mauler Mithel, Luke, Biggs, R2D2 etc)

However.. the Force Awakens core set has the updated rules, quick reference guide and the new damage deck...

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. I'm definitely buying 1 (and only 1 for now) Core Set this weekend. Which one will most likely depend on what is on the shelf when I walk in the store. (I try to always buy b&m when I can). Of course, if both sets are available what is a guy to do? I'm torn between get the Old because it may be discontinued at some point; (atthough I hear it is being reprinted) vs. get the New because it is new and better. I'll let everyone know how it turns out next week.

FFG is unlikely to discontinue the old set, especially since they've backtracked on making the new damage deck the only legal one for tournaments

I agree. You're not likely to see the old core go out of print until the entire game is out of print.

Go for the new core set first. The rules are more up to date, the templates have the new icons on, the damage deck is the new one. It just makes more sense. Once the old core set has been reprinted, pick it up, but no need before then.

We will come to a point where the old damage deck is no longer usable. That point can't be particularly far in the future. Once all the whining has died down and everyone has bought the new core anyway, they'll just make the change.

FFG discontinue the set with Luke and R2-D2? The odds of that happening are 0% while X-Wing is still alive. They may revamp the set in the future, but the original core set is going nowhere.

I wanted to make sure I let you all know the outcome after so much helpful input. I hate to see threads orphaned without closure. When I went to my FLGS this weekend, they did indeed have both Core Sets on the shelf. Oh the indecision! What is a game nerd to do? Whip out your favorite d6 and roll, of course. Long story short, TFA Core Set followed me home. Let the adventure truly begin. Thanks again for everyone's help.

It is highly unlikely that FFG will discontinue their old set especially since the new one is compatible with the old one unlike their LCG Game of Thrones where the 2nd edition is a total replacement of the first edition. The old set is being reprinted but it will not be updated so it will have the old rule books and eventually the old damage deck will no longer be playable in competitive formats. Still the old core set is not a bad purchase you just have to treat it as a $40 expansion pack much like the Most Wanted pack. You still get extra maneuver templates dice and a range ruler which having extras is never a bad thing.

It ties you more to the movies ...

Do we know this for sure? That'd be a silly decision. They'd have to keep making two different damage decks.

Ah well.

If they cancelled the old core how do people get those pilots? Luke and Biggs are very iconic.

Honestly, the original Core is the best of the two sets. It comes with more upgrade cards, some of the best named pilots among TIE Fighters and X-wings, and the damage deck continues to be legal. I really like the new TFA Core, but it feels like it was built to compliment a collection not start one.
