Questions about hawk bat swoop and medicine.

By Spieler1302444, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hello,

we have questions about the two skills mentionend in the title. We would appreciate some help, we can´t figure it out :)

1.) Hawk Bat Swoop

If successfull, the user engages a target within short range. Can you handle the skill like force leap/jump in the enhance tree? For example, if an enemy stays on a roof in short range, can i directly jump to him with hawk bat swoop?

And can you use the skill in non combat situations? Sure, it is kind of a replacement for enhance, but in a weaker version.

What do you think?

2.) If you roll a medicine check, you recover strain for every advantage. Can you use medicine if someone isn´t injured to heal strain? Or does this guys need atleast one Wound to perform the medicine check.

Thank you very much for your help :)

Greetings

I would say no to hawk bat swoop being used in non combat. It's very specific to lightsaber combat.

I would say medicine can be used without wounds for strain. If I have someone feeling a headache at work I give them somethi ng to make the better even if they aren't wounded. Medecine isn't just for wounds

Hawk Bat Swoop is specifically tied to a Lightsaber combat check, so it wouldn't be able to be used out of combat. The fact that Enhance has Control Upgrades that specifically cover doing Force leaping out of combat is another strong indicator against Hawk Bat Swoop being used for anything beyond a sudden lunging leap at an opponent with the intent to skewer them.

As for Medicine, the rules don't say, so you could allow it, but the fact you're trying to treat non-existent wounds does seem rather odd. Besides, all PCs get a free Cool or Discipline check after combat to restore lost strain anyway.

I see no reason a narrative injury can't be treated by a narrative medicine check.

And Dono is right in my book on hawkbat swoop. There are a lot of lesser versions or specialized versions of force powers in the talents. Those versions really should not be used to replace the full version of the power.

1) What is stopping you from getting to the roof WITHOUT using a Hawk Bat Swoop? Short is 'up to several meters away', simply spend a maneuver. "spending a maneuver to engage someone or something is as much a matter of moving into combat cautiously enough to avoid receiving a blow unnecessarily as it is moving a physical distance' [F&F Core pg 215]. The letter of the movement rules don't say that it can't be a vertical distance and Star Wars is a cinematic universe.

On the other hand Performing a skill check is an action so if your GM says that it would take an Athletics check to get there than you wouldn't have an action left to make the Hawk Bat Swoop with. This is not necessarily a function of distance, but should factor in difficulty. A character could scramble several meters to a roof without an Athletics check if there was a ladder, if the ascent to the roof wasn't vertical, If there was a somehing shorter nearby to hop up onto first, etc. If not than you'd probably need Enhance or an Athletics check, and since an Enhanced Jump is an action you wouldn't have an action left. [unless you had, and used, 'The Force is My Ally' to make it a maneuver.]

2) The last sentence of Hawk Bat Swoop says "If the character cannot move to engage the target, the attack automatically fails." Let's look at some times when you can't move to engage the target -

a) You can't move at all (critted so you can't, or restrained).

b) You can't move any more (you've already moved all you can to get to short range and if you give up your action to move again then you don't have an action to make a Hawk Bat Swoop).

c) You can't move to get to that target because there is a barrier in the way (a wall or force field you would have to cut through first).

d) Moving to get to engage the target would take a skill check [probably Athletics], leaving you without an action left for Hawk Bat Swoop.

As far as using it in non combat situations - if you are not in combat attacking than somehing with your lightsaber _starts_ a combat. "I don't like the top of that tree, I'm going to scramble up it a few meters and attack it with my lightsaber."

Of course you can, and it would be an Easy check since with no wounds taken their 'Current wounds equal half or less of wound threshold' since 0 is less than half of any wound threshold. This is why you can give someone a Gatoraid and tell them to breathe slowly without having medical training....

If they happen to be a droid you should be able to do the same thing with Mechanics "R2, reinitialize your memory buffer.'

Thank you for all your help :)
