The Future expansions

By 0beron, in Talisman

Now that it has been several months since Harbinger came out and also just now The City, for Digital, it may be time to muse about the next expansion(s) that are possible:

There most likely will be some new Realm, that bridges The Woodland and the Highland. I'm ready for that, but also hope that this realm is as different from Deep realm as Deep is different from Nether; meaning something out of the box, perhaps. The possible adjacency to The Graveyard makes me want some aspect of that to be involved (a Pet Semetary? An Ancient Cemetary).

Someone mentioned a Rivers expansion, which seems like a good idea, and to me, also opens up an expansion to it; "INVADERS", which maybe could have several different scenarios, like Harbinger. An invasion from Pirates or renegades, and invasion from sea/amphibian type huminoids, or lizard men. Anything that could develop a mechanic of these invasions coming through the Sorn river.

I myself, previously mentioned Giants expansion, perhaps a play off of Dragons, but instead of Draconic Lords, maybe 3 or 4 different types of Giant races; Storm Giants, Ice Giants, and so on.

I still would like to see a NPC with a female badass, like an Uber powerful Witch or Queen of Vampires.

What about something that is the opposite of the Blood Moon? Something that can use the Day/Night mechanic but is more oriented towards .... Sunlight? So instead of Lunar events, Solar events? Of course having a big bad might be harder to conceive, but there are possibilities... going back to Lizard huminoids maybe?

It won't be a surprise if I will reply "Timescape or life!", will it?

You should know that I am not against a Timescape, but I guess with the way things are, it would need some serious re-tooling. I sorta think that something along the lines of Nether Realm would work; have it be more based on the cards that are encountered, than the spaces one traverses in the Timescape. Perhaps you have 2 decks. 1 indicates the general type of world/dimension/environment you are in as you traverse (with instructions or caveats on how to move along to the next?) and another deck for the encounters you have in the environments. Maybe there are variables on these cards, so they encounter differently in different types of dimensions? Or the result of these encounters determines how you move through the Timescape. This would be more like the Dark/Light fate encounters in Woodlands where your personal balance determines aspects of the outcome. In my idea the result of the encounter determines your next move.

Of course, there still needs to be a space, a 'Realm' card or whatever for the character figures to be placed when in the Timescape.

So if a POD, than it becomes The Time Realm, The Timescape Realm, The Timeless Realm, etc. Such a Realm card is relatively small and could find a place - - somewhere, lol, on the game table. The Card would list, detail the general conventions or protocols of movement/encounter in the Time Realm.

Again, no characters ever encounter each other and I do want cards/encounters that have the Space Fortress or that place where you can be judged a threat to the Space-Time continuum. !!! (and a possible back door to the Crown of Command).

See Nemomon, I do like the Timescape!

If you want to figure out what's next, look at previous Talisman editions or fan contributions. I bet a company like FFG has figured out what and when to release many years in advance. Therefore, anything that hasn't even been mentioned anywhere is highly unlikely.

I think expansions for the expansions. :-) Seriously though, small packs that add characters to the set and some additional cards for various sets. From a marketing standpoint this would be a good option to encourage people to buy extra expansions and to add the additional characters to their game. And they could be relatively cheap since they could go into a blister pack. By adding cards, they could give us replacement cards for some broken ones, add cards to deficient decks and expand on the game to beef it up so that would be a good direction to keep people interested.

I for one, would love to see timescape but if I don't, that's cool too since I have a timescape printed for use. :-) I Would like to see what spin they would put on it and give us a few sci-fi characters!

Most of all though, I just want an updated FAQ.

Expansions like Blood Moon, Firelands and Harbinger have nothing to share with previous editions, so we already have a lot of material that was never anticipated and completely unexpected. I think at this point anything can happen, if it happens at all.

I think the Timescape without a board is not really a Timescape, but some really sad and not funny joke ;) . Though, I'm not saying that Your idea of two decks is bad, but I wouldn't want it to be called the Timescape. Perhaps a some kind of Dimensions Rift or something these lines. For me the whole spirit of the Timescape is not just some random cards, Aliens and Hands of Fate, but also - what You mentioned - inability to encounter each other and a quck teleport to any space including the CoC. PoDs use ~36 cards, and among them there must be a some kind of fixed rewards, or otherwise people won't bother to enter this Realm, because keeping drawing cards "until something interesing will come out" will be considered time wasting. Originally the Timescape deck was pretty small, but I'm not sure if recent, or rather I should say modern, players will be happy seeing an expansion with 30 cards divided into 2 decks. Especially Timescape fans would consider it it a blasphemy. Well, but then again.. it is not that FFG would even ever start considering creating it..

BTW, I made a small card in spirit of this topic:

http://z5.ifrm.com/30023/191/0/p1263835/The_Moment.jpg

It is based on The Moment weapon from the Doctor Who. I didn't want to make it a Magic Object, because it would become far too overpowered, and players would just wait when it is triggered. While it is a Spell, it is hidden, and nobody knows when it will take its effect.

I'm not saying its effect is the best, though I wated to mirror the War Doctor's punishment "to live" while the universe itself would be changed.

I made a "portals" expansion. A small expansion:

At the beginning of the game everyone takes a turn placing a token (or 2 for a total of 6 tokens numbered 1-6) anywhere on the board they would like except for the dragon tower. In the game any player may choose to encounter a portal at the start of their turn. When encountering a portal, roll a D6 and refer to the chart:

1: Your turn ends where it began. Roll a die for every object and follower in your possession: On a 1-3 you lose them. On a 4-6 you retain them.

2: Your turn ends. At the beginning of your next turn roll a die to see which counter you appear and may begin your turn.

3-5: Roll another D6: You begin your turn at the properly numbered portal.

6+: You may choose any one portal to begin your movement from.

We also mixed in some cards to the deck that allow you to use a portal in mid-movement and an item that allows you to choose the portal you wish to go (after which it is burnt).

For this we created a new character, "Teleporter" that always rolls 2 dice, choosing the result, when using portals.

This could easily be made into an expansion with some extra goodies and characters. :-)

I've said it before, Fantasy novels, stories, etc have long used 'dimensional' travel, portals. There is nothing intrinsic about fantasy that can't allow some sci-fi elements to be included. My own example was from the Witch World novels by Andre Norton, where in almost all cases you could not travel to this Medieval, Magick-based land, without going through some portal or Siege Perilous. The only time where it was otherwise was in an early novel, Web of the Witch World I believe, that an Alien race INVADED the Witch World by space ships. So Timescape was never unreal, in that context. To me at least.
