The existence of two different decks creates a healthier metagame, further bolstering the current environment of creativity and amazing customization that X-Wing offers to its players. Toward that end, for the foreseeable future, players will also be able to choose which damage deck to use when building their squadron. The X-Wing tournament rules have been updated to reflect this change.

Please note that in order to showcase the new damage deck and provide spectators with a consistent experience, all competitors will use The Force Awakens damage deck at the 2015 X-Wing World Championship . One The Force Awakens damage deck will be provided for each competitor.

The Tournament Rules, which are now Version 3.2.3, say:

Players may choose to use either the original Core Set damage deck or The Force Awakens™ core set Damage deck.

This is weird.

If you have Gunner, Accuracy Correctors, or anything else that could trigger off the old Blinded pilot zero dice crit, you will run the old deck.

If you have a list with no EPTs, no named Pilots, or no Secondary Weapons, you'd be foolish not to run the old deck.

So, FFG has just rewarded a few builds by allowing them to choose a highly favorable damage deck, but all the other builds are now equally effected by the new deck. Wonderful.

You can find new Core Sets out there for like 20 bucks. Come on guys, everyone should just quit complaining about having to buy the new set. I fear those complaints are what caused this confusing ruling.

I was really hoping the new deck would actually go into effect. It's much more fair overall.

Is FFG run by Roger Goodell? Seems like they waffle on every decision lately.

Yes, and I apologize for any of my moaning because I bought it anyway and have actually felt like it was fantastic product. I didn't think I wanted it, but FFG knew better than I did.

This is weird. We all know why the new damage deck is necessary. FFG themselves went to lengths to explain why - that they wanted damage deck that affected all lists consistently.

We've had confusion/problems at recent tournaments, because newer players that jumped on with the Force Awakens core set want to participate but couldn't because they don't have the old damage deck.

I'd hoped that this announcement was going to say that both were legal for the next few months, after which only the new one would be legal.

But this decision represents a complete reversal of their original intent behind the new damage deck. They specifically said they didn't want that level of inconsistency and they certainly didn't want people choosing decks based on their lists. The opposite is now the case.

Let's see how it works in practice, I imagine it's impact will be very marginal in most cases. But my initial reaction is that this is odd. It feels like such a core concept like 'damage' shouldn't be part of list-building.

Wow. I never took FFG for a bunch of cowards, but to cave in to short-sighted complaining like this is not only cowardly, it's stupid.

Yup, I picked up the Force Awakens core set recently too - pretty much for the sole reason that the new damage deck would be required for tournament play.

That said, I'm not against this decision. A lot of existing players - probably the vast majority - will still only have the old core set and the old deck. I'm against enforced purchases due to rule updates in general, so I'm certainly not going to argue against this.

On a separate note, I wonder if this tells us anything about the current sales of the Force Awakens core set? Certainly FFG will be aware of the number of original core set sold, the number of Force Awakens core sets sold and the number of players who have attended official FFG tournaments and events...
