It was legal upon the full release of the new Core Set. It was set to become the only legal one in January.

What I find funny about people hating on being able to choose, is that it has been this way since TFA got realeased!

It has literally been an option for months now. I'd not seen a single complaint until the announcement that it will be that way for the foreseeable future.
