I think the new should be required.
Petition to REQUIRE the New Damage Deck
The new deck is just plain superior, rules wise. Add in the fact that they aren't updating the old deck cards to work the same as the new versions, it just creates a rules headache.
I'll say.
I can't wait to have to explain to one guy why his TLT Y-wing can't shoot through Blinded Pilot, but his opponent's identical ship with the same critical can.
I was going to buy the new core anyway, so I don't really care either way. I do like that the new deck is equally terrible for every ship, but I do like being able to choose which deck to use.
Overall it was the lesser of two evils I suppose. There was so much butt-hurt about being 'forced' into buying a new core set just for a damage deck. (even though there are many ways to get one nowadays)
It keeps the Red Core Set relevant so that store owners can promote both to new players. (instead of "you probably want the blue one going forward")
It gives players more choice, sure the old deck is sucky but who cares.

I kiiiiiiiinda thematically makes sense. The accuracy corrector lets you fire blind...because it corrects your acc----ah nevermind.
Why are you people against freedom?
Because it's the freedom to make a game mechanic matter less, and for most squads, it's deterministic. Look at it this way: if you're running 4 Academies and 4 Obsidians, would you ever take the new damage deck, except as a handicap? Some "freedoms" make the game less interesting, not more. In my opinion, dead crits were a weakness of the game, and I was glad that the new deck almost entirely got rid of them.

What do you mean "you people"..?

Not only is it more lenient to players who own the old set, it's more fair to game stores who continue stocking the first core set. The places hosting Store Champs and Regional events are probably happy that they aren't selling non-compliant product for the game.
I honestly don't really care either way but - if we consider the new damage deck as essentially either an errata fix or nerf to the original one - where is the petition to allow the original phantom rules and the like?
The real solution would have been for them to just release the updated deck as a stand alone sale but oh well
Eh. I'd prefer it if everybody had to use the new, better-balanced deck. I think from the point of view of the nuts and bolts of the game, this is a bad decision. But the nuts and bolts of the game isn't the only thing FFG have to take into account. As vyrago says, this might be the lesser of two evils.

As an advanced artificial being designed to be the perfect bum fuelled only by fortified wine you organic beings confuse me.
This is a bad ruling. The new deck fixes issues from before, and balances competitive list building. FFG just needs to release the deck as a standalone, done. This is just lazy.
... and when you play at home and with friends; NONE... OF... THIS ... MAT-TERS-SSsss.
SING ALONG WITH ME GANG.
January 1 it will be the only damage deck legal for competitive play. That is plenty of warning.
I think today's announcement appears to change that, Ed.
Yeah, I re-read the article and now I am scratching my head. Not sure about this one. This is not like the Scum Dials over Rebel/Imp dials for ships that cross factions. These are two completely different damage deck now legal for competitive play. And now you can pick which one to use based on your squad. I am not sure this is a good idea at all.

If they want to give us some choice, they should apply a rule that the deck we bring to a tournament will be the damage deck your opponent takes from. That way, you can't just bring whichever deck benefits your deck most, you have to bring whichever deck you think will work best in the meta. Also, if one list becomes significantly improved by using a specific damage deck, the players can just bring the other deck and self-correct for exploitation.
I'm into it...not the petition, but the ruling. Feels great to be on the RIGHT side of history!!!
/trolling...don't take it seriously, bro.
Wasn't there fairly recently a big hoopla about being /forced/ to use the new deck and being /forced/ to buy a new core set?
Now that we no longer have to do that, it's suddenly a big deal?
Did you guys oppose the legalization of debris fields? BUT IT'S NOT FAIR IF I'M FLYING 4 OBSIDIANS AND 4 ACADEMY PILOTS WHY WOULD I EVER PICK THE LARGE ASTEROIDS?!
Geez, whats next? Letting you build your own damage deck out of a pool of damage cards? Stupid.
UH-OH FFG... no one fell over themselves to buy the new Force Awakens Core... at least not to the degree you expected.
MM has only sold around a thousand, since the big release... dunno.
Seems like a bad idea to keep on flip-flopping with these rules and erratas gang.
Makes you look ... not good.
Game balance is game balance... this isn't like the mats (which are garbage) or dials (which are irrelevant) rulings, the new deck was a competitive balance patch. You don't see *insert competitive vidja game here" letting you choose between 3.xx and 3.x1 Paladin Face Smasher classes, right?
From a rules perspective, this seems worse. It defeats the purpose of a new damage deck in the first place.
But from a gaming perspective, it's very nice of FFG to not require players to purchase a new core set for the damage deck. Shows a level of respect for their consumers I haven't seen from many gaming companies.

Ultra Street Fighter IV actually lets you play as older versions of characters, though not competitively. Street Fighter 2 Turbo has something similar, but the old versions of characters are allowed in tournaments.
Edited by WingedSpiderThe only way ffg could solve the original issues would have been to hand out the new damage deck for free upon entering a tournamwnt.
I dont mind having not to buy the new core set right away (i will buy it eventually), but this new ruling seems to defeat the purpose of a new damage deck.
A RECOUNT! I DEMAND A RECOUNT! I DON'T KNOW WHY WE'RE YELLING!
