This is a bad move, OP. The new deck is so much superior to the broken old deck.
I agree completely. At any rate, all players souks be required to play the same deck. Makes sense to pick the one that is the most fair.

There should be consistency to the damage deck across all games. It's pretty much a core mechanic to the game. It's kinda ridiculous to allow you to build your squad, and then decide which deck is better for you.
There are a few squads that will just always take the old deck, and everyone else will pretty much take the new deck.
Groan. Just pony up and buy the new core set guys, Jesus.
I vote for only using the new damage deck. Consistent rules and mechanics are more important than keeping the price of admission down.
This is a horrible choice. Its got to be one or the other and in this case the new one makes the most sense.
Its a buff to swarms that's for sure. There is nearly a fifth of the deck you don't worry about. Munitions failure, Damaged Cockpit, and Injured pilot.
It makes the new deck now seem pointless.

Okay, it's not so bad. I actually love the new upgrades and my orange and black Poe is my favorite paint-job yet.
But I still don't agree with this ruling. The major thing reason I caved and bought it is because I felt cheap playing the old damage deck. I was flying a squad where munitions failure and injured pilot did nothing but my opponent was running the new damage deck. As luck would have it, those are the crits I pulled. I felt so dirty.
Until FFG or someone else comes out and tells me exactly which squads are favored by the new damage deck, I won't believe it because I thought the whole point was to balance it. Any ideas on this?
Aces and secondary weapons use new, generics and no secondaries use old. New deck is scary but PS 0, discarding an hlc, or soontir without ept and pilot ability is way worse.
I feel like Initiative Should pick Either Place rocks first or choose one damage deck (type, new or old) to use.
I just don't understand why they would bother updating it if it wasn't going to be required? Choice and strategy are great. But not on something like this.

I don't think that's it. Those were the things the designers were explicitly trying to get into line with their new deck. The way the article is worded, it sounds like there were some unforeseen interactions that made the new deck better for some squads than it is for others. And I mean if we completely ignore the old one, some squads are better with the new damage deck than other squads are. If that is the case, I can be okay with this change. But if it's just because generics/munitions are better with the old than the new ... well duh!* That's why we have a new one in the first place!
*I'm not yelling at you, I'm frustrated with this decision.
Let's take it a step further and allow us to pick individual cards to make up the damage deck.
Customization is good and there might even be people who pick up 5 cores for the non-crits. How could you say no to that FFG?
Oh boy, here we go.
The new deck was created to balance the game...
This pretty much what sums up the issue in every way. Even in interviews FFG seemed thrilled that they were able to do this and make a more even playing experience for any squad. We already have enough variables when looking to build a team to take to an event, there is no reason to add another especially to a core mechanic of the game that should be consistent in all your games. Making a consistent balanced game is whats going to help them grow x-wing, not pandering to players that don't want to buy the new core set.
I'm not thrilled with this. Lets see how long they allow this.
While I can see this adding another element of strategy to the game, I feel like swarms and generics benefit from this more than named pilots.
Wish FFG had just held their ground.
People say swarms and generics as if they're dirty words.
If a Dash player gets to pick 3 large debris fields that he ignores pretty much, I think it's okay that I take the old deck to get a bunch of dead draw crits for my academies. Super Dash also will no longer lose his HLC or suite of abilities with the new deck.
It's fair. Puck the one that benefits your list just like you pick the 3 obstacles that benefit your list.
This also prevents a "Come on dude" situation when someone brings a bunch of friends to tournament night and has enough damage decks total but not enough of either one. It also doesn't force players into buying a new core, not everyone wants one.
What? How was I saying Swarm or Generic like they're dirty words?
I mainly fly swarm and generics.
So coming from someone that flies generics all the time, I just don't like seeing changes that favour ships that don't need loving. I mean, sure you could argue that the new damage deck was favouring named pilots, so you could say that the old deck balances things out.
But let's assume that FFG wasn't lying when they said they came up with a more balanced damage deck in the last 3+ years of playtesting... well then the old deck pushes the favour away from balanced and towards generics.
Again. I'm a swarm player.

We are excited to see what you can do with one more option available to you!
I'll give you a spoiler on that, FFG: we'll pick whichever deck will have the least impact on the game. We'll take a look at our squad, take a look at the damage decks, and through a very simple decision process, choose the deck that makes crits less interesting. I really don't think that adds anything to the creativity of squad-building.

I would feel dirty using the old deck. It was changed for a reason.
This decision by FFG is GREAT . It was a pretty low move to require everybody to buy a new core set just to participate in organized play. After already spending hundreds of dollars on this great game, I didn't want to be forced to spend more on a $40 core set full of ships I don't want just to get a new damage deck. (I have very little interest in J.J. Abrams's new fan film, because of Disney's decision to wholesale scrap the "expanded universe" and replace it with their own series of books, comics, and films).
Why are you people against freedom?
This is a non-issue. Half of you are just buttmad that you bought a new core set just for the deck instead of ebaying one for cheaper or trading for one in person.
Support new deck only. This is a lame ruling.
What if the damage deck you chose bring was the damage deck you'd use to give crits to your opponent?
Why are you people against freedom?
Let's play a game where I field 300pts and you have 100pts. Who needs rules when you have freedom? I'm off to buy Age of Simgar...

Have you read a single reply in this thread or are you just going to keep making assumptions?
The new deck is just plain superior, rules wise. Add in the fact that they aren't updating the old deck cards to work the same as the new versions, it just creates a rules headache.
Why are you people against freedom?
What do you mean "you people"..?
