3 Years Ago......

On this exact day all star wars fans lives changed forever. I remember walking through the school courtyard like any other day only to have my friends tell me that Disney had bought lucasfilm, and that they were making star wars 7. It wasn't until I confirmed it on the internet that it really sunk in. At first I was worried. Star wars meant so much to me, and I didnt want it ruined by new movies. But over the past few years as I've followed every announcment, trailer, and interview I've stopped worrying. I can't wait for this december, when not only an amazing movie, but an amazing new star wars movie is released.

Where were you 3 years ago, and how did you feel about the news? How do you feel now?

Then: Excited/10

Now: Excited/10

Is it three years already?

First I thought: Figures, George is probably retiring an doesn't care much about the Star Wars legacy, Disney will probably make decent movies, but I expect more of the same.

Then I heard that JJ Abrams would be directing and although I like his Star Trek movies, they really are a reboot, with a different feeling. Imo, he is the Michael Bay of SciFi. It made me worried if he would turn Star Wars (known for it's lengthy scenes) into another Rollercoaster ride, that might be enjoyable, but less unique.

Based on the trailers I still fear the new Star Wars would be another (albeit enjoyable) Rollercoaster ride, that shows spectacular fx, but doesn't have a gripping story.

But who am I kidding, the OT was full of plot holes. Why would the Empire be concerned about a small band of rebels, that only have a small base on the moon of Yavin and could only field a few dozen fighters when threatened by destruction. Even the base of Hoth seemed to small to house any group of Rebels that would have been any threat to a massive military presence like the Empire. It doesn't make sense.

So, I expect the new movie will be enjoyable. contain some nice ship vs ship battles (I found the previous movies a bit lacking on that point) another farfetched story, but not too farfetched to make it entirely silly.

I just wonder if the can make the First Order with their sith-fanboys as threatening as Darth Vader & the Emperor were.

I'm still glad. Bastard ruined Star Wars with the special editions and the mediocre prequels. He also added CGI to THX 1138! A movie shot in the late 60's/early 70's, it looks awful.

"Hey, remember that weird scene where THX is attacked by a mutant little person in the outer shell of the city? What if we replace the little person with a CGI monkey?"

"Hey, remember that iconic car chase sequence? What if we used CGI to add in a part where he's on an underground highway weaving through traffic? It won't look like a ******* PS2 game or anything."

"Hey, remember that scene where THX is enjoying himself while watching the erotic channel on the hologram TV? Let's have a robotic male masturbator automatically lower from the ceiling, wouldn't that be cool?"

I honestly wouldn't have minded the prequels as much if they were shot like the original trilogy with practical effects. At least they'd have that iconic Star Wars look and feel. You'd at least be able to appreciate them in a purely visual 'hey, let's project this across the ceiling at the rave tonight' way.

what there is a new film coming out? why didn't some one tell me

what there is a new film coming out? why didn't some one tell me

it's not a film but a documentary (or news report)

:-)

what there is a new film coming out? why didn't some one tell me

Because Luke isn't even on the poster, so it's NBD.

Dont panic ... he is at Tosche Station picking up some power converters

How I felt about the news at the time was a mixture of "AWESOME" and "UH OH". Former because it's Star Wars and I figured that the Empire wasn't finished. The latter because I enjoyed the prequels but hated the acting, the script, the overindulgence in CGI, the acting, the fact it felt like a rushed job to "get it done" rather than a well thought out trilogy from someone who cares about the story and not the "CA$$$HING".

Now?

JJ Abrams was a name that had me worried at first. The two Star Trek movies are the best I've seen since First Contact and Wrath of Khan. The movies were awesome. BUT, he just nuked the whole history of Star Trek! Vulcan wasn't destroyed and Spock's mother was still around in Next Generation. I've not read/watched/played any EU, but to learn that the whole post-Return of the Jedi EU was being flushed down the toilet made me dread what was going to happen.

"Sith boy baggins saw his whole family destroyed in the death star so got a pint of red matter, opened a black hole and went back in time. Death Star was warned of an annoying little farm boy so blew up Tatooine instead of Alderaan after nuking Yavin IV....." Something like that.

But then I started seeing teasers and reading what I could. I'm now happy for the following reasons:

1. This is 30years in the future, not a time travelling reboot.

2. Rubber masks and lifesize X-Wing prop, as well as sets and on location photography. BB-8 is a real robot! I'm sure there'll be CGI, but this film seems to LOOK like Star Wars should.

3. Harrison Ford is back! "Chewie. We're home." My favourite clip from the trailers. Don't care about Luke, I just want to know "where's Lando?"

JJ Abrams did a good job with Star Trek (if you can get over the time travel rebooting). He appears to be making it more like the original Original Trilogy. I'm cautiously optimistic with a dose of excitement.

He's at a convention, telling everyone how he was in Star Wars.

I was excited until I realized they'd probably screw over the books, and then excitement went to fear as they announced JJ Abrams as the director. Right now I'm interested, but not super excited. I'm cautiously optimistic.

3 years ago ......

........there was no Off Topic section on these forums so a post like this was perfectly suited to the general section.

Just sayin'. ;)
