Holy **** great idea, are they stickers or water decals?
Painting squadrons without the paint
Ok. Here are my preliminary A-wings. There are a few catches with these. I tried doing full decal and also two part decal over the fuselage and cockpit. In the end, what worked and looked best was to paint canopy, behind the canopy and engine nacelles. It wasn't what I was ideally going for, but ended up looking the best. For you non-painters out there, I'm not sure this will really fill your need.
The only decal on these models is the front portion of the fuselage (perhaps the hardest to paint consistently from model to model and make look interesting, also the most visible.) In addition it does require some small modification to the top part of the fuselage by removing the little (gun?) nubs on the surface. Honestly, these seem a little out of scale to me anyway. Let me know what you think. Y-wing decals are printed, but have not tried them out yet. When I made the A-wing decals I color matched them to Vallejo's Cavalry Brown, which is a great color for these IMO.

I like 'em. You're right, the nose strips are the hardest. Any chance of getting some blue ones to mirror the Ralph Macquarrie version?

Yes! I'm planning to create a variety of colors for different squadrons. Blue and green at a minimum.
Do you use microsol/microset on these? Are you doing any prep on the plastic before application?

I'm using Microset and no surface prep. If you wanted to clean the surface first to remove any mold release from the plastic that would probably be beneficial but I didn't bother. Some of the parts are more waterphopic than others depending on how much residue remains from the factory. These are so small though I didn't bother. When I was experimenting with the other decals trying to get them to conform to the cockpit I was softening with microsol and even so more aggressive decal solutions like Champ, but by the time it go to the point of looking good, it was too much effort (more than just painting it).
what kind of paint/color did you use for those A-wings?
Also...i expect a lot of people will want these A-wings after seeing Worlds, haha.
Love these, will order the X-Wing ones when the other fighters are available.
Are you going to do the B-Wings as well as the As & Ys?

These are water slide decals.

I typically use Vallejo acrylics so my decals are printed to match. The A-wing color I used is Vallejo: Cavalry Brown

I've completed my B-Wings but haven't posted, perhaps this afternoon. I did the ROTJ scheme which is pretty basic. I'll include those in my next decal batch. Y-wings are still in process. The problem is that the yellow of the decal blends with the tan color of the models. I'm tweeking the color to be brighter. I don't wan't orange and I don't want it to be so subtle it isn't noticed.
As it looks now, if I end up doing a Rebel expansion decal set it will include enough to do all the ships with the following schemes:
Awing: red,green,blue (Ralph McQuarrie)
Bwing: Orange circles (ROTJ) probably another variant as well
Ywing: Yellow and probably green squadrons.
Xwing: new variants
I've ordered another set of rebel expansions to experiment with so hopefully by the end of the week I'll have some more Awing posts. I've done a preliminary Blue for the Awings that I'm pretty happy with and hope to share soon.
You could try putting a border on the yellow for the Y Wings, to delineate the difference between the markings and the grey.

Yeah, I've tried that. The scale of these is so small getting that fine a line to print cleanly is a bit of a challenge. I think I may need to up my printing DPI. B-wings below. Not spectacular, the ROTJ doesn't offer much of a scheme to be very interesting, but it gets the job done. I'm looking at other schemes that might be more interesting.

New photos below. Thanks Chucknuckle for confirming the idea of outlining the yellow stripes. While it's not perfect, from "play distance" the yellow Y-wing stripes are more apparent. I'm working on green, red, and blue variants. A-wings in green and Ralph McQuarrie Blue. Feedback appreciated.

Love those blue A-wings. I knew there was a reason I hadn't gotten around to painting mine yet... ![]()
Just picked up the X-Wing set on Ebay. Was not looking forward to painting them.
Cant wait to bust em out!

Excellent. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm hoping to have the Rebel Expansion decals available by the end of the week. Also, I use MicroSet as my setting solution and it works really well.

Thanks. The actual blue is much closer to the correct shade of blue. These photos make it look more turquoise, which it isn't. I'll see if I can post another pic.
nvm...not a relevant question.
Edited by ChurryMake sure you put up a link when you get the rebel expansion set up!
I've added a new B-wing variant Nova Squadron.

Gah! I hand painted Nova squadron... And yours looks much better.
Was your nova squadron completely done by decals or some with paint?

Just the sunburst is decal. The rest is painted. The B-Wings and A-Wings require some painting. The cockpit area at a minimum. I'm going to make a revision to make the yellow a bit more vibrant and post.
Looking really good. Are you making the other colours to match specific paints like you the red A-Wings with Vallejo's Cavalry Brown? i.e. do the blue and green a-wings match to a paint colour?

I am. All the decals can be color matched to Vallejo paints. I imagine a paint conversion chart could be used to match to other brands.
