Painting squadrons without the paint

By urloony, in Star Wars: Armada

Rather than paint these tiny bits, I thought custom decals would be easier and faster. These were completed in two evenings. I've just gotten started with Armada and only have the core set as of last weekend, so don't have any of the other squadrons yet to share, but hope to in the future. Decals were applied, R2 units painted, wash applied, and matte airbrush. Models are the stock unpainted and unprimed straight from the box. Enjoy.

Its a great and novel way of doing it - and it makes me wish I had a working printer to do just the same.

Kuudos.

That looks brilliant. Where did you get the decals from? Can you buy them?

Need these decals, awesome idea!

can you upload your file? i would love to try some out

Where did you get the decals? Will you be selling these?

Seriously, no joke, those decals are amazing. Would love to get my hands on a few, and as you can see, others would also love it.

I have been working on a decal project on and off for the past year, but glad someone else was managed to beat me to it :D !

If you have experience working with vector based graphics/decals, please PM me! We should collaborate!

The thing I wanted to do is take the decal sheets that Millennium Falsehood on the X-wing forums made (with Millennium Falsehood's permission) and I've wanted to add the panel lines and weathering directly on to the decals unique to Red 1-12. I just haven't had time to get to it with the real world and everything getting in the way. I've been printing on paper to test fit, so it's in the ball park, but definitely needs fine tuning.

In the mean time, here's my work so far... please use it, modify it, improve it, bash it, etc!

Also some TIE love! Warning: I'm still tweaking the dimensions on these guys. If you do a "beta" run and have some feedback, I would REALLY appreciate it. I made my drawings with a combination of SolidWorks 3d models and a simple paint program :)

Wow, thank you for the great responses. I hadn't considered the high amount of interest. I am looking to make these available to you all soon. Hopefully as early as the beginning of next week. I'll keep you posted!

Yeah, this is a great idea and looks really good

What sheets are people printing these on? Do they require a specific type of printer or any kind of special handling or treatment?

Can I just cut out the middleman and buy the printed sheets from someone?

This is amazing! I would love to be able to do this. What kind of paper did you print it on? How did you apply those tiny decals?

What paper, which glue, which printer? (Laser or inkjet?) ...

Just a heads up to anyone who doesn't want to bust out paint or decals, even just some strategic application of colored Sharpies can really transform your squadrons. Well, for the Rebels anyway. The colors work really well on that neutral Rebel base color.

when using the self printed decals do you have to cut them out perfectly or do they come off pre cut like most 1/72 scale decal sheets do?? (The decal not the backing paper) The only reason you cut around those is to keep other parts from activating when you put them in water or to simplify placement etc.. i am just thinking that if you have to cut those out perfectly it would be a total PITA... but still slightly easier than airbrushing!!

It's actually very easy to cut out. The decals are small, but not too challenging. The fuselage decal is cut as one piece and applied wrapping around each side. The wing decals are smaller and cut out individually. The time saved over painting is tremendous and the result is far superior IMO. :) You can complete several squadrons in just an hour or two.

Stop teasing us, give us the links, lol!

You know urlooney, I actually have contemplated of using decals but the thought of having to go through all of the models intricately led me to believe that the brush is the lesser of 2 evils. But IMO decals sure makes those livery markings more consistent

Excellent! Now do ones for Y wings, A wings and TIE variants! :D

Nice. Will be buying as soon as the rebel ones are being sold.

Rebels being sold now at the link :)

They will be coming. I just have the core set and will have the expansions this week to play around with and create decals. I'm thinking the A-wings and Y-wings are prime candidates for decals. I'm not completely sure on creating decals for the TIE's as I think painting them is easier. I'm playing around with the idea of creating decals for the interior portion that doesn't have panel lines.

My Rebel Squadron expansion is in and will hopefully have new decals to release before long. Preliminary photos coming soon!

How are those A Wing and Y Wing decals coming along? I've got the X Wing ones on my watch list already, as soon as my funds are a bit more liquid I'll be getting some :)

my plan is to try paint first and then if i screw that up go for the decals.. lol personally i never liked the official rebel color schemes they look too non-military. So I am thinking of trying some low-vis air superiority USAF paint schemes on them first.. would be cool to just get some scale black or grey rebel roundels... and small numbers...
